If you have ever used a star map or application, you would have seen many many objects listed as "NGC(some number)" . But what does that mean?
NGC is short for New General Catalogue - or, more properly, "The New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars". It is a catalogue compiled by John Dreyer in 1888 (yes, "new" is relative), and contains about 7800 objects.
You may have also encountered objects listed with an "IC" prefix. These are also part of the New General Catalogue - or more precisely the follow-up supplements called "Index Catalogues" - adding another 5400 objects.
The NGC (and ICs) are sufficienty important that they have been updated, most recently in 2019, and it now contains nearly 14000 objects.
Last night, I imaged one of the IC objects - the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, centering on IC4604.
This is an amazing and beautiful nebula complex, but it took some post processing to really bring it to life.
I just got the #Fairphone 5 and it's great and everything... but where can I locally store the pictures that I take? There is no folder whatsoever, just #googlephotos .... Good enough for me that I have #protondrive but it's not really optimal.
The #deGoogle project continues. This week I want to get off #GooglePhotos. Looking for a secure photo storage service with Android support that won't sell my data to an AI.
🖼️ Privacy-Focused Google Photos Alternative 'Ente' is Now Open-Source
➥ It's FOSS
「 The developers have completely open-sourced their server source code for everyone to access.
Doing that also resulted in merging all of Ente's code into a single repository that can be cloned to develop robust alternatives to the likes of Google Photos and Apple icloud 」
Immich Self-Hosted Photos and Videos Solution – My Warts and All Video Review
Immich is a really modern looking and responsive self-hosted solution for your photos and videos. It has a number of similarities to Google Photos and is often promoted as being the closest alternative right now to Google Photos. I’ve installed Immich on my V ...continues
Apparently, you simply can't have a folder of photos uploaded in the cloud. No. It has to be "an experience" with painful memories resurfaced, dead relatives repacked in the "best of" autogenerated albums, reminders of long departed pets set for you every year. Deleting all my files from #GooglePhotos.
so in Google Photos there's really no way to re-order photos in an album? And no way to send feedback or get support? Google are so weird #googlePhotos
This was a HUGE problem for years. You buy an EXPENSIVE Android phone, and try to do something BASIC, like trim the beginning and end of a video clip. Google Photos would often take longer to process that video, than the video took to play in real time (and an iPhone would finish the same task almost twice as fast).
A recent update to Photos has improved that processing time... By a LOT...
I'm extremely confused by what just happened with these two photos on my Pixel 6 Pro. Shots looked fine in camera, but when I opened them in #GooglePhotos, one of them had turned weirdly impressionistic, while the other remained "normal".
@dansup#Flickr used to be my number one go-to place for photos. It was great. #GooglePhotos changed the game for me though, especially when it was free -- I just stopped sharing as many photos. I was never a big #Instagram user, but I have now migrated all my IG photos to my personal #Pixelfed instance, and I've even posted a few more there.
Improve your WhatsApp photo sharing experience with this tip. Learn how to send high-quality photos without losing any data, and how to send multiple photos at once.
Combing through #GooglePhotos to delete, archive, and/or put photos in albums is painful. It's probably beyond time I degooglefied my data into decentralised, user-empowering, privacy-friendly alternatives.
