Finally got @photoprism#photoprism running on my home server! Genuinely so excited about this, I cannot wait to upload every photo I’ve ever taken :)
anyone have a good technique for dividing my photos from my girlfriend’s for ease of use for both of us, or is it just gonna have to be pretty mixed in?
#Immich looks interesting, but now I've already set up #Photoprism on #NixOS on my Pi. And the fact that you need like five docker containers to run Immich vs one NixOS service configuration for Photoprism doesn't make it any more appealing.
@hmiron The latter :) On #NixOS, you can abstract what's necessary for setting up a service behind a NixOS module. There are a lot of premade modules already included in nixpkgs, like #Photoprism. That module can take some configuration values, and also define defaults. So setting up Photoprism only requires services.photoprism.enable = true;. Then you can specify additional config values, like what port it should run on and in which directory your photos are stored.
Got this little fellow, an Argon One M.2 the other day, and looking to set up a few services on my Lan. Still waiting for a few things to arrive. Intrigued by #CasaOS but have zero knowledge about #Docker. I played around a little on an old #RaspberryPi 3 over the weekend just to familiarise myself a bit, but after installing a few docker apps the whole thing froze. I've used #Linux for years, I'm just a regular user, not a Dev or sysadmin, but projects like this can be fun. #ArgonOne#Linux
@nyx I already have my eye on cloudflare tunnel, #PiHole, #Photoprism, #Seafile, #Jellyfin and a few others. I'll definitely give nextcloud a look, but I'm not sure if it's something I actually need.
This project is more about fun than actual need. My understanding of everything is definitely limited, but I'll hopefully figure things out somewhat.
Maybe some note taking thingy too, I could have used one getting into this little project 😃
What software does everyone use for managing photo libraries? I haven't had great luck with most of the FOSS options out there but I really do not want to go back to anything proprietary. #linux#backup#photography
I'm really weirded out by #PhotoPrism being so erratic in its response times when tagging faces. Sometimes that action completes in less than a second, sometimes it takes half a minute, blocking pretty much all other updates to the database in the process.
Now that my #homelab server is up, I spent some time with #PhotoPrism. Using a 3rd party app, I selected some photos from Apple Photos on my iPad mini and synched them over as a test.
Really like the web interface and I’m impressed by how much data you can see or edit for each photo. Best of all is the AI in PhotoPrism that automatically tags and organizes images.
I’ll be testing some more but if the positive experience continues, I’ll start auto-synching all of my new photos to my server. 🤓
The good news for #selfhosting is that since the rise of all these big tech services some years ago, #free software has become much better. I have been experimenting with #photoprism for running a local photo server and was amazed by the features set and UX. #selfhosted
@boombastik thanks, that one looks pretty sweet as well. I haven’t had any experience with “diva-ness” so far and the #photoprism app seems to be feature complete and well documented. Might give this one a shot later
When I take a picture on my phone, #syncthing puts it on the network storage where #inotify sees it and signals #incrond to run 'index' for #photoprism
in other words:
in less then ten seconds every picture taken with my phone is available in my photo-library application and backed up, all using free and open source software.
Why does #Photoprism not support S3 for uploads??? That seems like a no brainer option to support for this kind of thing... sure, you can keep the metadata in the database, hold things for processing locally, but after that, you don't need to keep the originals on the hard drive anymore, they're taking up valuable disk space...

ente è da un po’ la mia alternativa preferita a Google Photos. Ne ho fatto anche una recensione e mi sono sempre sembrati seri e attivi....
