the dissapointment at bandcamp development (I blame Ethan Diamond or the whole founders team who supposedly all left at the sale not the team who's now actually running it) just can't get out of my head. I keep thinking what we will be loosing if-when enshittification shows up, I keep thinking about alternatives, a vision of federated hubs of little bandcamps, a guide how to #BeYourOwnPlatform using GRAV/WP, listmonk, mail-in-a-box... or some other combination of floss.
@luka I think it would be great if the spirit of Bandcamp could somehow be carried forward (with improved feature set and ergonomics).
Back when EPIC came into play, I thought the money from them could bring great new developments to Bandcamp.
It would be amazing if there was a #federated#opensource#successor to #bandcamp for musicians to promote and sell their #music and for #musicdiscovery on the fan side of things.
I really can't help but look at this whole blocklist drama with some amusement tinged with exasperation.
Anyone who has done remotely any reading on #P2P systems and #federated systems just has that flaw jump to their eyes when the state of #ActivityPub implementations is seen, and in general how no importance is given to #AsynchronousCommunication communication in the spec and nearly as little to P2P use.
Basically, what did you expect? Of course it'll devolve into petty fiefdoms.
"The 'net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it" was a comment about #Usenet, a #federated / #P2P system with gossiped (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gossip_protocol) message exchange which wasn't particularly picky about its transport layer (indeed you could load a spool on a floppy and mail it), not the internet.
After several month of hard work we are pleased to announce that we just released Monal 6.0! 🥳
This version comes with new artwork by Ann-Sophie Zwahlen, support for Audio-Calls funded by the EU’s #NGIAssure via the NLnet Foundation and many, many other improvements and bugfixes. The full list of changes can be seen in the following posts.
Bandcamp's new owners dismiss half of the platform staff. And they declare "It's business as usual".
Also Bandcamp is preparing to align with the other platforms.
All very predictable, I’ve been saying for a long time that a platform similar to Bandcamp, but decentralized, federated and open source should be created.
One of the main benefits of a #federated#music ecosystem would be that while I personally have no interest at all in an "all-in-one" bells & whistles music discovery / scrobbling / streaming / social extravaganza "Platform A" - I could still follow and interact from my minimalist zen low-overhead solar-powered self-hosted single-user instance of "Platform B". Exactly how say #Epicyon & #Mastodon happily interact. (Sung to the tune of "Ebony and Ivory").
I just found out the polls are saying we think China is our biggest concern as Americans.
I would like to know where and when these polls are taken.
I would like to participate because clearly you stupid fucks dont poll any normal humans.
I lived in Jersey when Christie was in charge-- I am angry as FUCK Trump's stupid, shit-filled diaper ass is making me cheer for Christie's chucklefuck of an existence.
I pretty much have CNN on 24/7 in my bedroom because it is the easiest thing to ignore, and I get breaking news relatively quickly.
When I woke up this morning, the story playing was about Trump's latest case-- the fraud one, if you haven't been playing along at home.
Anyway, it made me think. Since their New York business certifications have been revoked and a third party is dissolving their New York holdings... is this the 2023 version of banishing?
an extensible open source #federated#social networking toolkit, that empowers communities to easily configure their spaces from the ground up.
There is still time to see this and other #fediverse app demos, and join in what will likely be dozens of #unconference sessions over two half days online.
Having just had an attempted right-wing brigading, it's made me appreciate just how much better moderation is with a #federated model.
Instead of having to depend on near slave labor in the Philippines to handle it badly, since I run my instance I report the first lame troll to their instance. Then when I see a wave of bad trolls all from the same 2 instances come, I block those instances, and the problem is solved.
Tomorrow is Rosh Hashanah, and I am currently working on my menu and doing what prep I can tonight.
I generally don't do much with my religion, but the antisemitism lately has been so damn rampant, I've decided I'm just going to Jew harder.
Anyway, my current plans for food are pot roast, onion noodle kugel, apple and honey challah, and homemade apple cider.
Any good ideas what I can add to this? We have a decent pantry and I don't want to go shopping-- so just hit me with what you've got and I'll find something that works.
Please check out my etsy shop, and maybe pick something up!
I've got stickers about a variety of things, candles, and rose salve available at the moment... with cayenne salve coming down the line as soon as the packaging for it comes in!
There's free shipping on orders over $35, and free shipping on stickers!
Welcome aboard #nautical.social, the digital haven for everyone who feels the call of the open water. From weekend paddle-boarders, novice #boaters, liveaboards, seasoned #sailors, to old seafaring legends, we've dropped anchor here for you! This is your safe harbor in a much larger #fediverse.
nautical.social is open for public registration. i created this #Mastodon server to make new friends, for new adventures, and help build a #federated#community.
if anyone wants to move their profile here, i can manually set your "joined" date based on your old profile joined date.
i don't expect this server to get too big (i hope it doesn't) but please feel free to refer nautical.social to your fellow #sailors who might be interested in an ethical social network! ⚓
For several reasons (don’t @ me) I still have accounts on those other sites (winding down) and it’s continuously baffling to me that people I consider politically and academically smart continue to complain about #enshittification (of the #birxsite, of Google, of Chrome) but can’t be arsed to use the alternatives that are already in place. What is this phenomenon? Even those fleeing the #birdsite go to #bluesky - and talk about how it will very probably go down the same route. But #Mastodon is „unusable“, say the super communist critics of #tech on the central website of the very industry they complain about
@rheinze
People #complain about the fact they have to get used to new #tech that people might have never done anything with. It takes time to move to a new #platform, especially if it's #federated some people prefer the #control a site has with the #centralized system as it has a basis of who controls it. #Mastodon doesn't and that causes people to loose direction of focus on the bigger picture and become afraid about it. Or using a new tool that only #geeks use. That is why #meta made #threads
RANT: I hate the fact that my ISP can restrict access to certain sites
How can it possibly be, that an ISP, which I’m paying for gets to decid, which sites I’m allowed to have access to, and which not?...
