Getting an answer - any answer - to your #FOI isn't always easy. And it might be getting harder.

Figures for both Scotland and the rest of the UK suggest few get everything they ask for.

So which stories saw success with their FOI request this week...

Figures are similar for UK Government departments as a whole - for July to September 2023, a similar 68% were either fully or partially withheld or just unanswered.

For 24% of #FOI requests a response is still outstanding, the highest proportion on record since figures began in 2010.

A variation on the how much did that cost question - how much was spent on the thing that didn't happen?

Plans to build two new platforms at Manchester Piccadilly were scrapped last year. An #FOI reveals the cost of developing the project was £23m.

This one also potentially works anywhere and for different types of public bodies that run their own vehicles.

#FOI shows PSNI spent £3.7m fixing banged up vehicles since 2019.

Damage was caused by 'ramming incidents', vandalism and road crashes.

Of those, 1,569 are disabled children under the age of 18.

We've covered an increased NHS staff absence due to stress, depression & anxiety, but this seems to be a widespread issue.

#FOI shows 28,379 cases of rickets and 269 cases of scurvy since 2019.

Scurvy is caused by not enough vitamin C in your diet over a long period, while rickets affects bone development in children, most commonly due to a lack of vitamin D or calcium.

You sent off an #FOI request. And you've got an answer!

But then when you come to write the story, suddenly the public body is disputing what it sent you

This happens depressingly often with FOI...

Talking about compensation payments, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust said, due to human error, there were inaccuracies with #FOI data provided.

The MEN asked for an explanation of the 'inaccuracies' and updated figures but none have been provided

clairemiller,

These kind of inaccuracies are very unhelpful.

It does also suggest some poor quality control in putting together responses, a lack of taking #FOI seriously, or just rubbish records management.

As shown here, it's not always easy to get updated information.

Greater Manchester hospital trusts paid out almost £6m in compensation for injuries suffered by mothers and babies during birth.

#FOI shows Tameside & Glossop paid out £3.8m between Nov 2021 and Nov 2023, while Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh paid out £1.6m.

The theme of this week's #FOIFriday is the use of #FOI to reveal poor and/or illegal behaviour.

FOI can be a really powerful tool for bringing things to light (particularly the extent of them).
