Here's an interesting piece by Rowan Atkinson on the Q. of whether you should buy a new #electriccar or continue to use your old petrol car a while longer:
its clear that an old car's #environmental costs are largely already accounted for so its only the marginal environmental costs of usage that we should factor into our considerations;
so rather than buy #electricvehicles, we might be better refusing the three year cycle of replacement, & then trying to drive less
The BYD Seal "launched" in Australia this evening. The prices turned out to be very competitive so we put down a deposit for the base model. The NSW EV stamp duty exemption and rebate are still in force for electric car orders placed up until the end of the year so that helps reduce the effective cost even further.
So I'm having to park closer to the wall of our driveway as my Dad now has a Van he uses for work which is taking up room.
Side effect being it was a rather tight squish plugging the cable for my car to charge in.
To resolve this I've made it semi teathered, a few cable clips from Screwfix and a 3D Printed holder for the cable and voila. It actually looks rather neat.
Downside is I need to get a second cable for public charging, which I rarely do.
I have a new car that’s electric. I’m a month in, and I’m hooked. Never going back to gasoline cars, particularly when I can charge at home using the solar panels so the energy is, well, free.
We drove #electriccar to Paris recently and back, via Dieppe - no worries.
Last December I drove to Berlin and back. Again, each drive took about 10 hours with couple of stops - no problems.
Stop believing nonsense in the media. It's a moaning of either corrupt people or let's just say - less gifted in the upstairs apartment - who think their privilidges is just a norm. #climate#ElectricVehicles#climateaction
On paper, in theory, #ElectricCar repairs should be far less than they would be for an internal combustion engine vehicle, as there are far fewer moving parts.
In reality though, that's not always the case. Here's who is gatekeeping EV repairs, and keeping them high.
Since the #wildfires in #Greece, & now #Maui#Tenerife, #Canada, #France, a lot of the 'normal' #advertising feels completely dystopian. I keep being served #ads from Jet2 to go to Greece, the very company that fucked up the repatriation of its tourists. Now from #Brazil, the shameless use of #AI on #elisregina & her daugher, music & longing for family, to sell... #cars. Yeah you say, #electriccar, still the same lobbies, the same unsustainable push to consumption. 📴
When I got into the car, it was indicating 100 mi of range. When I started it it went down to 91 miles of range. From the factory, it is supposed to have 86 miles of range. Folks say that the battery in an electric car is supposed to degrade over time, mine is just getting better. 😜
Getting a better idea of the real world achievable range of our new BYD Seal. Starting with a 100% charged battery we took an overnight trip from Sydney to Wollongong and back, with a bunch of driving back and forth while down there, ending up with a total of 251.0 km driven and 53% of battery charge used.
That would make the average efficiency 17.4 kW/100 km, which I think is reasonable for a trip that was mostly highway driving, with aircon on comfort mode at all times, some substantial hills, and a fair bit of rain (which does reduce efficiency a bit).
Scaling 251 km from 53% to 100% gives an estimated max highway driving range of about 470 km. The nominal WLTP range is 570 km, but that's based on an even mix of urban, suburban and highway driving.
A couple months in and I'm still really happy with the BYD Seal. The switch to electric has turned out to be really easy. This has probably been helped by choosing an EV that is, from a driver's perspective, very conventional (A separate driver's instruments display! Indicator stalks! Physical buttons!) but it is also reflective of the fact that electric cars are now mature tech, with more than enough range for most people's needs. In fact I think that for most people electric cars are already better overall. Better to ride in (quieter, roomier cabins) and better to drive (smooth, instant and abundant acceleration). The main issues are the still higher costs and access to home charging for renters and residents of units, but both of those are becoming less of a problem over time.

EV folks, I live in #Philly. My car just catastrophically failed today. There is an affordable Nissan Leaf I want but the charging stations are kind of a pain to get to and I live in an apartment complex. I think I can run an extension cord out to charge the car, however its not certain. There are some electric chargers at work but there is no guarantee that they will be available. There appears to be adapters for Tesla chargers that can do fast charge but I can't tell if they only convert to level 2 or not.
We are trying to weigh if its worth the annoyance or not. what do you think?
I’ve owned my #Nissan#Ariya for 6 months now. There will be a video update coming to my #YouTube channel soon. It was going to come out this weekend but recent events made that impossible. Don’t worry. It is coming! If there’s anything you’d like me to cover let me know! #ev#electriccar#electricvehicle
Automakers can’t quit manual transmissions so they’re cramming fake stuff into EVs (www.theverge.com)
Fake manual transmission is basically like playing a simulator.
