You hear them well before you see them. There were dozens of squads flying today; I saw hundreds of individuals, but who knows how many were in the air. They were headed north. The sandhill cranes flew over my house today. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #birdphotography #nature #cranes #HoosierMast

There were many sandhill cranes flying today. This picture shows 2 dozen or so individual, flying in a V formation.

I've only been here a few months but I've noticed that even non-birders get very excited about the migrating though every year. Yesterday was my first time seeing them and... I knew I'd be delighted by them but they were even better than I expected. They're so big! There were so many of them!

Ketzeleh is so used to cranes she barely notices them. These photos are from a while ago, maybe now with my better camera I can do better!

The kitty is looking up, her face out of focus, and there is a row of little cranes going down her back. Kind of like the spikes on a stegosaurus.

Amazing evening spectacle at the nearby rice fields with over 1,000 Glossy #Ibis flying at us as the sun set!

Mixed in with White #Storks, Great White #Egrets and Common #Cranes as Black-winged #Kites drifted by and Bluethroats scuttled by!

Sifting through the #ShoreBirds we found Spotted Redshanks, Wood with Green Sandpipers, Ruff and sooooooo much more !

A drawing made mostly with artist grade crayons by Caran D'Ache, rather than my usual painting supplies.

I'd say that along watercolors, crayons is the most difficult medium to master, because in order to get good coverage and rich, deep colors requires lots of skill. Watercolors are very difficult compared to other, opaque paints because it requires you to think in negative space due to its transparency.

And yet, these are the two art supply mediums we give to kids in pre-school and school. I'd posit that they need to start with colored pencils for drawing, and gouache for painting, not crayons and watercolors.
