Does anyone know of any #Calckey instances for discussing #computer / #technology -related topics? I have so many Ideas about this kind of stuff to talk about, but the character limits on Mastodon can be very constraining.
Day 2 of living without #browsers on my #work#PC. I am noticing a surprisingly low impact except for a substantial productivity boost. Working with my computer feels very peaceful because all that's running is #VisualStudio or #VSCode.
I thought I would miss the #web more, but no. Not really. Sometimes I look something up on my phone, but the #computer just feels like a workshop now. A pure tool.
I would totally get lost in endless pictures of #soviet#tech. Do you know of any good book to buy or account to #follow about that? Like this Agat, a soviet 8-bit #computer first introduced in 1983.
Sometimes, I ponder installing Windows 11 on my primary machine, even though I don't really like it right now on my secondary. Other times, I'm afraid that it will absolutely destroy my machine because I have so much stuff installed on it. What do you think? Go, or no? #Windows#Windows10#Windows11#PC#Computer#Tech#Technology
In her delightful forward to "Floppy Disk Fever: The Curious Afterlives of a Flexible Medium," Lori Emerson describes people visiting he Media Archaeology Lab. She describes the delight - even for people too young to possibly have nostalgia for using floppies - of using those computers and disks.
4/ Let's sit with these thoughts a minute. Aren't we living in an era where there is an effort to stamp out the notion of a general-purpose programmable #computer? Apple would love us to believe that the iPad - filled with hardware every bit capable of being a general-purpose computer - is a device for consumption, one which runs apps written by others, one which actively thwarts efforts to program on it. The home PCs of the 80s were programmable in a way the iPad isn't.
Their representative polls found that "the further away from the GP, the less people are willing to share their #HealthData" and yet BEUC concludes that while data use by medical profl's should require #OptIn consent, for secondary use by #BigPharma and #BigTech an #OptOut option is enough. ❓❓❓
It's mind-boggling how the @EU_Commission rep just says "don't worry, anonymised #medical records are not personal data" while ignoring a decade of #computer#science and de-identification #research.
Does anyone have experience with an #Apple#iPad Pro? My friend wants something laptop-like and really prefers Apple but #Macbook costs are ludicrous. I know it runs the M2 chip now, so I wonder how it is as a #computer replacement?
I just saw a relatively-huge #moth, about the length of my index finger, land on my #computer screen. It was casting a shadow on my computer screen, and I thought my computer was glitching out. #LOL
I've recently discovered Mr. Matt Lee's amazing YT channel. Each PC he builds is unique and incredibly stunning. Professionally (and beautifully) shot with no words. He also has a unique way of showing the PC’s airflow. Trust me, you’ll dig this.
Love #ProtonMail... hate their setup process on Windows. Needed sighted assistance because OCR completely butchered the password, and now that I have the password right Thunderbird throws an error at me saying that either it, my email, or the configuration are invalid even though it supposedly added an exception in Windows Firewall. sigh #Computer#Computing#Tech#Privacy#Security#Windows
So after about two weeks of being "On" my Virgin modem starts to drop about 5-15% of packets in bursts between 1/4 and 1s long. It is still fast but useless for say audio/video calls.
Load does not matter either to failure rate or onset of failure. Once it starts failing, only a hard reset fixes it (ie, a software "reset" is not a fix). Oh, and replacing the modem did not solve it.
I increased the #RAM in my #computer and so it performs a lot better and doesn’t need to #page now. One downside is that the #battery discharges significantly faster. However, I still think it was worth it.
