What obligation do #platformcoops have to operate at the same scale as or even outperform their venture capital funded corporate counterparts? If a #platformcoop does not succeed in having a similar reach as major corporations with comparable features, should it be considered "low quality" or are there other standards of success worth considering?
Property and Contract in #Economics: The Case for Economic Democracy by David Ellerman
This book makes 2 arguments.
The employment contract is the core of the #capitalism rather than private property
The employment contract is invalid because it violates #WorkersRights to #democracy in the firm. All firms should be structured as worker #coops for economic justice
I’m at the #CWCF conference this week, learning all about worker coops! I’ll be uploading some #sketchnotes of the talks. I loved this opening presentation by Margaret Tusz-King on mental health in worker coops
Running a company as a bootstrapped co-op is both easier than you’d expect (as far as logistics), and way harder (as far as having the time and money you need for it), than a “regular” company, much less a VC-funded one where you put a death clock on your company in exchange for a year or two of guaranteed prosperity. #coops
One thing that irks me about firms in (capitalist) markets is that they don't share information.
Capitalism is supposedly an efficient driver of innovation, but how efficient can it be when efforts are surely duplicated far more often than would happen if firms were collaborating?
So, how do you structure companies and inter-company relationships to foster both innovation (through competition?) and collaboration? Anyone have any info on this?
I'm mainly looking for some software development type of job (preferably withing the game industry), but anything else would be fine as long as I get to make above minimum wage, as I'm currently below it, thanks to Hungary's half-assed "public employment" program (they hire people for government institutes for half the minimum...
:TwinPines: "People do not know about cooperatives because of two things. First, a lack of information concerning cooperation, and second, the fact that its principles are opposed to privilege. Cooperatives have two things working against them; ignorance and selfishness." ~James Peter Warbasse (quoted by Cathy Statz). #cooperatives#coops
I'd appreciate if you could share this around. As someone opposed to #Spotify for a dozen reasons there was only #Bandcamp that was semi-ethical & gave musicians a fair deal. Bandcamp is under new ownership, had big layoffs, changed their terms & are starting playlists (likely to fill with AI music?). Thankfully coops such as Mirlo offer a place to share our music that doesn't simply enrich dubious tech giants. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mirlo/mirlo #newMusic#streaming#coops#music#kickstarter
Does anyone have reading recommendations for the incorporation process of cooperatives or the legal structuring of bylaws in co-ops and multi-stakeholder enterprises?
I think I've complained about this before, but at my current job I have two standup meetings every morning, a third meeting for an on-going project, followed by an afternoon meeting for the same project.
I'm basically just a fly on the wall for these, because I just need to be informed.
I wonder, for those of you who work in #coops, how do you minimize the amount of unnecessary meetings?
At first glance, it seems coops would have many more meetings.
"The annual pay of CEOs is more than 300x higher than that of low-wage workers. But most people believe a "fair" level of inequality should be no more than 7 to 1, on average, while in many countries people want it to be less than 4 to 1."
NEW: Former MP Keith Vaz to stand in Leicester East
Former Leicester East MP Keith Vaz is running for his old seat in the general election. Vaz today announced his candidacy for the seat, challenging his successor Claudia Webbe.
I'm looking for some employment opportunity, forming/joining a new cooperative
