Hey Canadian peeps. Have you tried recently to sign in to the CRA 'My Account' site? I've had the spinning circle all morning. Down Detector is useless, says they haven't been able to connect for a year. If you see this, let me know. Thanks!
The #FOSDEM panels on the #CRA and #PLD underlined the divide between policy-makers and #OpenSource devs.
To bridge that divide, I think policy-makers have to work to make the #EU more accessible, which is why I decided to launch https://unfsckthe.eu/, a collaborative knowledge-base that will provide documentation for the EU, and help make it easier for the open source community to get their voices heard in #Brussels
😲 🤦 Canadian Renters Now Required To Collect Foreign Landlord’s Taxes, Withhold Rent
" In a bizarre decision, the nation’s tax authority is telling tenants who pay rent to non-resident landlords to withhold a portion and remit it on their behalf, or they may be liable for the amount with penalties. To complicate things further, one Ontario policymaker warns tenants that have inquired about withholding have been threatened with eviction. "
This week’s topic in How to do your Canadian taxes is about multiple payee’s (or employers)..
If you are receiving multiple sources of income, your primary source of income should typically be the only one accounting for your personal amount deductions. Make sure secondary payee’s, (ex: CPP, OAS, or 2nd employment) are not also claiming these amounts for you through payroll or it’ll increase your tax owing at the end of the year.
The Cyber Resilience Act is being finalised in the next two weeks, despite the parts that could deeply harm #OpenSource. Rather than suggesting changes to the #CRA (plenty of others doing so), here's an article explaining why changes are still necessary despite the 11th hour.
Looks like the big #OpenSource foundations have got tired of being blocked by the #standards massif amd the @EU_Commission over #CRA standards and are organising their own initiative.
Waiting on a document from the #CRA containing a new online account PIN. Can anyone tell me what kind of envelope it will be sent in? I assume it wouldn't be on any kind of postcard-type thing for security purposes.
Today, I was a panelist on behalf of @cyberladies at Czech Open Source Policy Forum, discussing with @RezzaBuh and others the current version of Cyber Resilience Act.
Also, this conference is an official start of the first Czech OSPO (Open Source Program Office), created by Open Cities NGO here in Brno, Czech Republic.
It's time for Europeans to start writing to their MEPs about the Cyber Resilience Act. It has recently been modified in a way that will be very harmful to #OpenSource projects.
This article from Github does a good job explaining the issues. Those first two issues are the ones that have been recently and intentionally introduced. Your MEP probably doesn't know and still thinks open source has been excluded from the scope.
#CRA about to enter trilogue: We call on institutions to put the burden of liability only to those who benefit significantly financially from the market, while protecting developers and non-profit work
In case you missed it: After #GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), after the #DMA (Digital Markets Act), after the #CRA (Cyber Resiliency Act), The EU continues to lead the way with the #AiAct. None of these regulations are perfect. Many will argue they are not even Good Enough(tm). And I agree in parts. But in general I applaud the #EU for not shying away from regulations that are (IMHO) needed. So I once again say #ThanksEU and now the hard work to make these regulation better starts :)
#ThePHPFoundation, alongside leading open source organizations including the #Apache SoftwareFoundation, #Blender Foundation, #OpenSSL Software Foundation, #Python Software Foundation, #Rust Foundation, and #Eclipse Foundation, announced today a collaborative initiative aimed at establishing common cybersecurity standards in alignment with the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (#CRA):
