"We call upon our colleagues in the homeland and internationally to support our steadfast attempts to defend and preserve our universities for the sake of the future of our people, and our ability to remain on our Palestinian land in Gaza. We built these universities from tents. And from tents, with the support of our friends, we will rebuild them once again."
Association between COVID-19
and outstanding academic performance at a Spanish university
Conclusion Having COVID-19 disease, decreased academic performance in undergraduate students. Therefore, it is
necessary to prevent infection even in the youngest sections of the population.
The hardest part of this semester was trying to urge #students, amid the available #technologies, to really #read. Most friends worldwide are on mobile phones, preferring short posts, and not easily accessing links. I can therefore be thankful for the global readership of my #publications in these #research#repositories:
Japan's ResearchMap (和英), where I have filled in #Japanese as well as English information about publications (6,600+ downloads): https://researchmap.jp/waoe
We need to talk about digital ownership #oldailyhttps://www.downes.ca/post/76246 As Dan Gillmor says, this is a "terrifically nuanced piece" on the subject of ownership of data and digital media.
@oldaily Was going to recommend this article https://www.citationneeded.news/we-need-to-talk-about-digital-ownership on digital ownership to Stephen Downes' Online Learning Daily, but not surprisingly he found it immediately. Academic journalist Dan Gillmor is my friend IRL, residing mostly in this Kansai region around Osaka, so I am fortunate to be able to discuss such things with him and his Japanese journalist wife.
Regarding digital ownership, I cannot think of any way that having my Website https://japanned.hcommons.org/ at the publicly-funded Humanities Commons @hello infringes upon rights I would like to claim as a creator, and I can only hope that their data remains available indefinitely, such as to my 3/4 Japanese infant granddaughter when she grows up.
GDPR trainings for researchers in the post-AI world: 'uploading research data to an AI system is part of processing and they become part of the training dataset, becoming then a permanent record. Therefore do not upload personal data to public AI systems such as ChatGPT"
One of the weirdest experience in this social media ecology was to receive an email today from the research hub of a faculty announcing they've joined #Bluesky and inviting all of us to follow them there. They specified you need a code link. But they have none.
A university hub. In an exclusive social media club. I have no words (which is very, very rare).
Hello #AcademicFedi and #AcademicMastodon
I have a question for you (which might sound a bit provocative, but it's an actual genuine question).
What is really the value of Auto-ethnography?
I notice a new trend in some PhD group chat (Humanities) of students resorting to this method for their research. I'm personally puzzled, because beyond some reflexivity, how can a n=1 sample being any representative? Also, isn't it a very individualistic take on research?
We'll be guest lecturing at the Royal College of Art in London next week for RCA masters (of research) students. Will be lovely to share some of our collective's processes and experiments! Co-thinking/making in a collective comes with it's challenges but also so many great rewards when you operate as one multi-tendrilled unit. 🐙
Today is my #FediBirthday , so here a little thread to resume my first year here.
To be fully honest, my very first account was opened a couple of days before on a different instance, but since I consider Mastodon.Design my proper fedi home, where I really started to be actively part of the community, I think is more appropriate to celebrate the day I joined here.
As every human aggregation, the #Fedi has its share of drama, racism, and polarism, but my experience overall has been positive

So yes, I really love that I can control it a lot in my feed here. It really helped my mental health.
I also love the #AcademicFedi and #AcademicMastodon community, I've had insightful conversation and hope there will be even more in the future.
I have engaged with many interesting human beings around here, and loved how disagreements were often talked through instead of shouted at.

In the endless discussion of #Mastodon over #Bluesky (which, btw, really, we all should move on if not away from it and it would be about time), I am amazed bout the quantity of people posting (on Mastodon) that scholars post more on Bluesky than here, bc (insert whatever feature of Twitter).
Maybe it's bc I'm tired and sleepy today, but considering the endless stream of complaining here, wouldn't it be better for the #AcademicFedi to stop comparing and start posting about their work?
There might be something prophetic to the fact that I have a PhD drama unfolding together with a submission deadline on the month of October, Friday the 13th.
My next two submission deadlines are both on October 31st.
I'm in a tough point in my #PhD journey as changes in supervisory team are slowing things down and leaving me with a lot of uncertainty, while of course, I have like 1K of deadlines approaching.
So, for the first time in my life, I'm publicly admitting my mental health is in need of a boost, so please send good vibes :)
Cute pictures to remind me the beauty of our world are also welcome!
I start:
Here is my little cat Caffè tacitly reminding me the subtle art of not giving a f*
@phdstudents It's evening here in the UK and I really want to thank everyone today that responded to this post, sending nice pictures of animals and nature. Our world is beautiful and you are all beautiful people, who really cheered me up today. I'll cherish this post and will come back to it every time I'll feel a bit low.
Thank you very much #AcademicMastodon and #AcademicFedi you are really the best 💕
(This will be a very long list by the end of the year if I keep it up. We'll see.)
Your statements are basically done after the first few deadlines. I always thought I'd customize extensively for each school.
Nope.
On a week like this (with so many apps due Sep 15), you just don't have time. You have to trust that you already put in the work with your base template. It's a mental shift from fellowship apps.
