@fraying If you've just gone on to have a look and never actually post anything, does that matter all that much? Obviously a different story if for some reason you've been on and told your life story...!
@fraying The only good thing coming out of this is I'll be able to follow some of my favourite artists from the comfort of Mastodon once it's federated; I'm sure alot of them will join Threads with what Twitter's been doing
@fraying Did anyone, really: ANYone think the Zuck's META would behave otherwise? Really? Still after all these years? C'mon...
META's aim was, is and will forever be to aggregate personal data. The more, the better. And if there is a way they can get their hands on your data directly with profile including linking to other profiles, they will do it no matter the cost.
As long as one uses META services, one supports and legitimizes this very and despicable behavior.
@fraying LOOOOOL, didn't even know they use Instagram account for that. How foolish. Imagine creeps getting in your Threads and discovering the photos of you before even talking.
Yeah yeah, everybody. You deleted your Insta a long time ago. That’s not the point. The point is lock-in and abusive behavior to consumers that is already illegal in some places and should be illegal everywhere.
Normal people would never assume that just signing in to a new app with your Insta credentials would mean you can never remove yourself from that new app without also removing yourself from Insta. This is abusive and manipulative behavior from a company with a long track record of abuse and manipulation and I think they should be held accountable for it.
@fraying I don't like insta in the first place. it feels like a wasteland. nobody ever clicks on links in there, etc. I asked to be on bluesky months ago but they are being snobs.
@fraying I will say, that I have tons of websites that I still have an account for because they never offered me a method to delete my account once I signed up. Definitely amateur-hour, but not unprecedented. :)
@fraying Good thing I don't use either. Meta is even more cancerous than Twitter. I tried Instagram and it was basically unusable, because the algorithm sees any attempt to grow your following organically as spam bot behavior and will start stripping all the hashtags off your posts, making them invisible. They want you to have to pay for your following, either by buying fake followers or by paying to have your work featured on the front page.
@fraying I don't have an Instagram account so I can't sign up but even if I could, EU law on data retention means Threads can't even launch in the European Union here yet. I'm calling that a win-win-win!
This is deliberate. 'Make the cost of leaving greater than the user is willing to pay' is absolutely the sort of red-sky thinking I'd expect from Meta.
Between this and the massive data slurp I want every Pro-Meta person on the Fediverse to read this and tell me honestly how they could have possibly ever thought of this as a good idea.
