#RonaldReagan's and the #GOP's reasons were not benevolent, to say the least:

It is time for a small update on #Reagonomics:
How is the #GOP's long-term plan for higher education (#StudentDebt) doing these days?

@HistoPol In the UK apprenticeships looking more advantageous not just for technical workers. In the UK poorer earners after Uni will pay more than richer ones in loan paybacks

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

I'm not quite sure if I'm getting all of your points correctly, @JohnLoader6.

Are you saying that in comparison to the #US, an #apprenticeship in the #UK offers much better job opportunities? (as in #Germany, a "master electrician" might even make more money than college graduates and often has his/her own company. What's more, they can now also get higher-education grants for a master craftsman certificate AND...

JohnLoader6,
@JohnLoader6@masto.ai avatar

@HistoPol increasingly and I have a 5 year experiment under way. Eldest grandson wants to go to Uni. His slightly younger cousin will start as an apprentice plumber. Whilst government stupidly says we can have apprentice doctors (nurses too but they used to become nurses that way) other organisations including civil service offer apprenticeships. But getting a job is the best way to get the next job and work your way up.

@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@JohnLoader6

...get a master's degree on top of that, I they like.)

Are you saying that college graduates 🎓 in the #UK, like in the #US, have a higher level of indebtedness if they didn’t come from a well-to-do family background?

#us #apprenticeship #uk #germany

JohnLoader6,
@JohnLoader6@masto.ai avatar

@HistoPol oddly under new loan repayment rules someone who gets a high paid job will be able to pay off their student loan quickly. Someone, say a nurse or polic officer, on lower pay would take more years to pay off and hence pay far more interest. If you get to 100 you get a card from the king and one telling you you’ve paid off your student loan

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

JohnLoader6@@masto.ai

ah, I see. It is a problem intrinsic to interest-bearing loans then, that you are addressing.

I am not familiar with the #UK, but in the #US, due to exploding college fees and stagnant real incomes over the last decades, the same is true for college graduates.

I know that #nurses in #Anglosaxon countries are often not going through #apprenticeships but have a college degree. I also know they are allowed to do more of a "doctor's job" IDK about relative pay...

...(Dr. vs. nurse UK (%) in comparison to other countries.)

Regarding #apprenticeships in the UK, IDK about income. In many countries, you get paid by the employer (though less than a full-time employee) and don't have to pay tuition fees.
How about the #UK?

@HistoPol Reagan (GOP) lit the match that started the US into a slow decline in many ways not only the financial security of people were affected but also social stability. The War on Drugs was a race war against Blacks.
Nixon was corrupt but
Reagan was much worse.
