@gedeonm So cool - I don’t think I’ve seen any of your previous Inktober years so I’m really looking forward to this year! I always find it inspiring and it makes me want to give it a go again - so much fun.
@gedeonm That’s really cool to watch, and fun to see how you handle the shading and such. I wish the capture included how you handle juggling the layers—I’d love to see what you do there.
@cjgyt Generally I merge down similar types of layers into categories like outlines, base color, shadows and highlights. Leaving one layer as the “working” layer. When I’m done with that one I merge it into the appropriate category. Not always but that’s how I’ve grown to work with Linea.
@gedeonm I appreciate the insight! I sometimes wish Linea had more layers, but there’s something to be said for having to keep things very organized and have a disciplined approach.
@cjgyt Yeah, honestly we’re not trying to be Procreate. Linea is a quick sketching and ideation app and keeping it simple is a big part of that approach.

Time lapse went too fast. How did you get that repeating background line pattern. I know you didn't draw every single line by hand. I assume you did a few and copy/pasted them together, but I don't see any seams.
@leebennett It’s actually a new feature in Linea we’re currently developing - Layer Textures. Seamless textures you can sketch or paint right into your drawing. Gonna be great!

@uliwitness I drew last year’s Inktober all as app icons but this year I’m giving myself more permission to break the borders and experiment as I go along. But yes, they are all envisioned as iOS App Icons basically.
@leebennett Oh god, no! Turn on the template grid of your choice, grab the fill tool and click in the center of grid spaces, not on the intersecting lines, to fill them. 😄

It’s funny you can see just how much trouble I had sketching the Black Spy’s back hand / arm. The whole thing also didn’t feel right using smooth semi-circles for arms and legs. Then I put in bent angles and it started to feel right.
@gedeonm I love watching how this evolves! Also I just spent four days at New York Comic Con, saw lots of artists working on things, nobody, not one as impressive as the pictures we've seen you working on just this month!
Sometimes the biggest decision for each Inktober drawing is how to color/style it. I considered going all out color-wise for this one but scales that back to just a few colors and I think it turned out much better for it.

Let me first say I could not create this image.
I spent the first half of my adult life in the home audio industry and, for some reason that I do not understand, creative people will often times draw turntables mirror imaged from reality. Leave the layers with the notes and text as they are and flip the turntable and hand horizontally and it will no longer hurt my poor brain.

Leave it as it is so you can play “I am the Walrus” backwards.

@gedeonm I've really enjoyed watching your time-lapses and picked up a few tricks about using Linea better.
Any chance you guys will release a version for the Mac? I know odds are almost non-existent, but I wanted to put the idea out there just in case.
@jlward I’ll never say never but there are currently no plans since it relies heavily on Apple Pencil support. How would you see a Mac version working given that?
@gedeonm Well, ideally, I would like to use it with a Wacom tablet. Maybe that's a non-starter given reliance on the Pencil. I just really enjoy the feel of the tools in Linea.
There may be some implementation of sidecar or continuity that would make sense to use the iPad in place of the Wacom with a Mac, but nothing is jumping out at me as strongly as the possibility of using a Wacom.
As a consolation prize, could I get you guys to add the ability to use my own fonts in Linea?
@jlward Yeah these are the challenges we’ve discussed internally and if it’s really worth the development effort when great drawing/creation apps already exist on the Mac. As for fonts, it’s already on the list to consider but it’s not a slam dunk by any means.
@gedeonm I also want to be clear that I'm not being dismissive of a Mac-based Linea that uses continuity or sidecar. It's just that it feels like you're going to have to do more than that if you want to make bringing it to the Mac feel special. Obviously, the additional power and higher resolutions could allow for larger documents, but it still feels like there needs to be something more. What would make that special, but still feel like Linea? I don't have an answer, but I will think about it.
Mastodon has been an absolute delight! I miss Twitterrific existing. But I’m glad Ivory is here, and it’s super nerdy fun running my own instance out if my house on a Raspberry Pi. 🤓

And typing the word “gem” just made me realize there’s an emoji that some may have assumed inspired my art for today, but I truly had no memory of that emoji till now. 💎
Time-lapse process for Day 28: Sparkle. Creating and designing is a series of choices. Choosing what works and what doesn’t.
I had fully intended to put the starburst pattern into the background behind Homer’s head ala the soap box from the episode but once I got it penciled in I didn’t like how the desperate angles interacted with the curve of the swoosh and I decided to leave it out.
I would have made additional choices like enlarging the sparkles too but I ran out of time. 🤷♂️
@gedeonm I love this so much. That "disrespectful of dirt" line was one of the funniest things I've seen in the Simpsons; something about that whole commercial they did was just gold.
