rvawonk,

So, the former president of the United States is calling on states to take up arms to support Texas in its standoff against the federal government. That’s about as close to calling for civil war as you’re going to get without actually saying the words.

This is a situation that could spiral out of control in a heartbeat. I would not assume it’s just bluster.

rvawonk,

One thing that I think a lot of people may be overlooking is that Abbott’s (armed) defiance of the federal government — now backed by Trump and 25 GOP governors — is exactly what right-wing extremists have been waiting for. And training for. I have been writing about this exact situation for 6 years (see below); extremists have been preparing for this day much longer. This is almost biblical for them.

KawaTora,

@rvawonk
This is Trump's only shot to not die in prison. He has to take over the country. His cult of idiots will support him. Biden needs to federalize the national guard in Texas and order any governors who have mobilized guard units to be arrested for insurrection, ASAP.

rvawonk,

And sure, Trump fans may cosplay civil war a lot, but when the governor of Texas is openly defying the federal government, and the former president is calling on states to send their national guards to help Texas stand against the federal government — and 25 states have pledged to actually do so — that’s not cosplay anymore. This is a real threat.

@rvawonk We are not on the verge of Civil War because of this. It's another political distraction from the Right because they don't want to answer the questions of why they are torpedoing the Border Bill that the House has put together, that would ultimately help Biden and they simply refuse to do that, so what we have here is another political stunt. This isn't the first time Abbott has done stunts like this. I do not agree with Abbott, but this is simply political theater, not a Civil War.

@scottytrees @rvawonk I hope you're right, but as someone who grew up in fringe-right sovcit culture: this is exactly what they want. They're guided by faith, not rationality.

scottytrees,
@scottytrees@mastodon.social avatar

@textualdeviance In this particular context, the Right is trying to manufacture a border crisis before the elections. They think scared people will more likely vote for Trump. They tried this in 2018 for the mid terms, and as we've seen, they love to double down on losing strategies, so they are trying it again here. I'm not saying there isn't a wider threat of possible violence on the national scale, but this Abbott story is really not as alarming as people are making it.

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@scottytrees @textualdeviance Yes, this is also why Republicans are blocking the border bill in Congress. They want to postpone any solutions until after the election. Same playbook they used before to help Nixon and Reagan.

@rvawonk sure we've had insurrection, but what about second insurrection? Luncheon? Dinner? Afternoon tea?

Sean,
@Sean@liberal.city avatar

@rvawonk there is a greater population of Mexicans in the state of Tijuana, why doesn't California have the same problem as Texas? For that matter why not Arizona or New Mexico?

Why is it that only Abbott can't seem to abide by federal law and federal courts' determination of that law? It's almost like he's being obtuse to cause a problem, or at least exasperate the problem, and relishing in having a border crisis that he is too incompetent to handle.

When I am President, on Day One,
instead of fighting Texas, I will work hand in
hand with Governor Abbott and other Border
States to Stop the Invasion, Seal the Border,
and Rapidly Begin the Largest Domestic
Deportation Operation in History. Those Biden
has let in should not get comfortable because
they will be going home.

@rvawonk

So, after committing his first insurrection, he's going to prove his right to hold office by committing a second insurrection?

All these state governors are posturing, because it’s other people’s family members in the guard. Not the governors or their kin. It’s all show, zero substance.
Talk is cheap, action is a mutually exclusive Venn diagram circle.

@rvawonk If only we had some kind of functional justice system, you know ... to THROW HIS MF ORANGE ASS IN JAIL?! Or we could wring our hands and clutch our pearls until statute of limitations runs out. Wonder if we can pin covid murders and Jan 6 murders on him?!

High time to convict him and take him off the ballot…

Domestic terrorism and call to insurrection (again).

Hope dementia catches him soon!

@rvawonk Once Donald was elected, the destruction of the United States became inevitable.

@claralistensprechen3rd That's mean. Why would you say that?

claralistensprechen3rd,

@Gustodon Review your comment about the destruction of the United States to get a clue.

@claralistensprechen3rd I'm condemning Trump and identifying the lasting, fatal effects of his administration. How does that make me a Putin?

@golgaloth @rvawonk yeah, it seems to approach a «shots fired at Fort Sumter» situation eventually
