Just donated $100 to the amazing Organic Maps project: Trackerless, fully offline, OSM based, open source mapping for Android/iOS. Great UX & routing, super fast & good coverage even of hiking paths, elevation lines & public transport layers...

From their website: "Organic Maps is one of a few applications nowadays that supports 100% of features without an active Internet connection. Install Organic Maps, download maps, throw away your SIM card (by the way, your operator constantly tracks you), and go for a weeklong trip on a single battery charge without any byte sent to the network."

@toxi Excited! I donated a little too.

goatwildernesscollective,

@toxi nice! hope they find themselves creating a Linux app one of those days, currently there is only one mapping app that works, pure-maps, no tracking depending on which app you choose.

@toxi @organicmaps it seems that the public transit feature is not finding the public transit in Vancouver, which is odd: would this be something in OSM where they don't have the data or permission to use it, or is it an app related thing?

    @toxi @organicmaps went digging:

    > Their licence requires the attribution of TransLink which is incompatible with the licence of OpenStreetMap which only wants "OpenStreetMap contributors" to be credited. For this reason direct imports are not allowed as long as TransLink does not make an exception for the OpenStreetMap project.

    https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/TransLink

    so it looks like an upstream issue

    @leftpaddotpy @toxi is there a metro in Vancouver? Other PT is not supported yet, any volunteers to implement it are welcome!

    @organicmaps @toxi there is! I only tried it on the bus though.

    quirijngb,

    @toxi ooft this looks great! Thanks

    @toxi @tuxdevices oh my god I have this problem so often. Why do all apps lose state so quickly? It's so annoying

    @toxi Sounds and looks too good to be true. Thank you for sharing!

    @toxi Thanks for the @organicmaps tip. I've been wondering what the alternatives were after recent disappointments with other apps. It looks great on Android devices, and seamlessly imported all my location bookmarks.

    @toxi Umm ... assuming you want GPS switched on so that the mapping app can show you where you actually are on the map ... what (portable) device can drive its GPS subsystem, the worse battery eater in yer average phone, for a week on a single charge?

    tomdewar,
    @tomdewar@mas.to avatar

    @toxi awesome, thanks for sharing

    exus1pl,

    @toxi I'll stric with OsmAnd as I'm already used to it but it great to know that there are still devs willing to create new OSM frontend for phones which work offline.

    Dotheren,

    @jmlich Ma to v CR nejakou vyhodu proti offline verzi mapy.cz? (pro me, jako nekoho kdo potrebuje hlavne turisticke cesty, takze online google mapy pouzivam max kdyz hledam jidlo)

    • ano vim, sem liny testovat to, misto toho se ptam repostujiciho/doporucovatele :)

    @toxi very nice! I've been a big fan of maps.me which is also OSM-based and offline-friendly ever since hiking in Iceland

    @toxi checking this oot

    the5thColumnist,

    @toxi
    So it's like a standalone handheld GPS ?

    michaelofstjoseph,

    @toxi This is exactly what I've been looking for. Getting rid of Google Maps and YouTube were the last 2 things from Google I used regularly.

    codedude,

    @toxi any idea why certain businesses don’t show up when searching for destinations? For example my gym that’s been around since the 70s doesn’t appear

    @toxi @organicmaps gotcha. Yeah the building exists in the map but no label. :) thanks for the info!

    @Beurt @toxi that’s planned. With your donations and support we can do any feature earlier ;-)

    bomboloni,

    @toxi I didn't know I needed this. Thanks for sharing.

    muratk5n,

    @toxi Which ones are the hiking paths? Are those the dashed lines?

    Millicent,

    @toxi accuracy tops every other app. Only map to ever correctly show where my street breaks into a paper road/wooded path. Even labels the private neighborhood beaches. My HOA would be so pleased, but that’s a story for another day.

    tyas,

    @toxi What is the difference between Organic Maps and Osmand?

    gchetard,

    @tyas @toxi I'm interested too. How does it compare to more mainstream OSM implementations such as OSMand or Magic Earth?

  • gchetard,

    @toxi @tyas There is a paid version of OSMand on Play Store but the Fdroid version is fully-featured and free

    cartocalypse,
    @cartocalypse@norden.social avatar

    @toxi @gchetard @tyas
    Osmand has much much more features but at the cost of complexity and reasonable slowness in some areas. Paying is good for development. A fully capable version is available free in fdroid.

    Some of my favourite features:

    • Your own custom POI catalog
    • Display of hiking routes with their symbology or SAC level
    • Display of public transport
    • Recording, management and analysis for GPX routes
    • Contour lines, hillshading, slope etc
    • You can look at Mapillary footage
    mikebrondbjerg,

    @toxi nice one! I've only just discovered hiking apps over the past few weeks (all trails). This is great! Would be nice to have the community element of sharing routes (but obviously that takes more infrastructure & data).

    toxi,
    @toxi@mastodon.thi.ng avatar

    @mikebrondbjerg Yeah, it's a whole universe of "special interest" apps to explore, isn't it?! For AllTrails, I'd like you to point to this though:

    https://www.androidcentral.com/apps-software/how-to-control-your-privacy-settings-on-alltrails

    FWIW I've been using a version of https://www.outdooractive.com/en/ (sublicensed by the DAV [German Alpine Club]) - it's great & better privacy, but doesn't do everything offline (e.g. routing). Supports GPX import/export, choice of multiple mapping providers and hiking related overlays. Still using it frequently too... Also nice for documenting trips, e.g. here:

    https://www.alpenvereinaktiv.com/de/tour/saalfelder-weg-steinkarspitze-kastenjoch-landsberger-huette-/254938617/

    mikebrondbjerg,

    @toxi 😬! Gah.. stoopid apps! Thanks for the tip off! Will review my settings!
