since free in video games has come to mean more like heavily monetized, predatory business models, and even being rife with ads, what's another word or way to describe games that are free but without all that noise?

@gmr_leon I mean, "Free to play" already distinguishes those heavily monetized games from truly free games well enough imo. It is "free" for the purposes of hooking you in and luring you to open up your wallet.

@mezz Yeah, but if you read/hear someone talking about a free game, it's not clear by that term alone if it's truly free or heavily monetized or "free" with a subscription for access.

Hence my interest in an alternative short word with a distinct meaning of non-commercial & really free.

@gmr_leon that's an interesting one. I think I'd want to push all monetized F2P games into the "freemium" category. The only other thing I can think of is not very succinct - along the lines of non-monetized F2P? lol

coryleach,

@gmr_leon maybe time to revive the word “freeware”?
