The thing about chat control / upload filters / client side scanning, whatever it's being called now; They are responses to an old generation of technology - one of an internet governed by centralized corporations.

Anonymous, peer to peer, file sharing exists. No centralized place to subvert - except the software running locally. Imperfect now, but intrinsically extant.

What proponents of these laws really want is to roll back the clock; something that is, fundamentally, not possible.

@sarahjamielewis Nazis are unserious people doing very serious things: they can and will outlaw basic human activities in order to exert violent nonsensical control over everyone else. It's exhausting but they need constant opposition. Even Holocaust victims talked about how ridiculous Nazis were -- Nazi itself is a shortening of "Nationalsozialistische" that happens to be a colloquial and derogatory word referring to an awkward, backward, and clumsy peasant. They were mocked from the start.

My local bike shop guy heard about my quixotic quest to adapt a 40 spoke Sturmey Archer hub to a 36 spoke rim with machined adapter plates, and give me another hub to play with.

It looked nice on the outside, but it did not make the expected ratcheting sound that a freewheeling hub should make when spun. It also did not work correctly.

I thought maybe it would just be full of gummed up grease inside so I poured a bunch of paint thinner in there and let it sit, but that did not fix it, so I disassembled it and found it to be extremely crusty, rusty, and gunky inside.

I'm going to try to make it work again, even though this hub still won't work on my bike because it's drilled for 28 spokes lol. It just seems fun to see if I can clean it up and fix it.

here's the spiel i always give people about bojack horseman

it starts off as your typical adult animated comedy, something akin to family guy-lite but with a focus on lampooning hollywood

but midway through the first season, it slowly begins morphing into a far darker deconstruction of those same tropes

like it essentially asks the question: "what if someone tried living real life like it was a sitcom?" with all the consequences and drama that would entail

because bojack's whole thing is, he was a famous sitcom actor back in the 90's, and sees life like a series of tropes. but it DOESN'T work that way

the tone shift was so prominent that it permanently changed the way indiewire reviews seasons. now they review entire seasons at once instead of just the first half

We got maga because white folks didn't like being called out on their bullshit.

We have folks on the left claiming that loan forgiveness never happened despite hundreds of billions being forgiven.

Should unauthorized immigrants to the state of Palestine be given a path to citizenship?

#EvanPoll #poll

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@evan inapplicable. Zionists arrived with guns and tanks and immediately started a war with the inhabitants; if the Palestinians could've resisted the combined might of the West steamrolling their homeland they would've (and tried their best to), much like Native Americans many years prior. It's a completely different situation than an empire destabilizing countries whose citizens then flee, unarmed, into the empire to try and survive.

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@railmeat @evan the state of Israel was declared in May 1948. Before then was the 1907 Bar-Giora armed militia, the 1914 kibbutz antagonizing Arabs with economic exclusion, 1918 Jewish and British conquest of Palestine, 1920 Arab resistance and formation of a new Jewish militia, 1936-39 killing of 10% of adult Arab men after another uprising, the 1946 Jewish bombing of Britain's HQ... shall I continue?

Zionism has been violent expulsion of Arabs since at least 1938 by Ben Gurion's own words.

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@railmeat @evan if China decided that America should become a homeland for their people and sent their people over here until they made up 30% of the country and then overthrew it, declared a United States of China, and got both light and heavy armanents shipped in to by their own admission repress and expel Americans from their homes, at what point is it morally acceptable for the Americans to say "no, fuck that" and revolt?

Was the American Revolution staged and won by terrorists?

Now I'm not one to typically pay attention to or care about analytics on my socials, but this one is pretty hard to miss... the video I posted of the veterans burning their uniforms has over 4 million views.
When my stuff gets a small fraction of that, media outlets are usually all over it and I get hella people in my DM's and emailing me asking if they can either share the footage or license it. For this one? Nothing. Not one in this country has reached out to ask. I got one request from Al Jazeera Doha and some Turkish media network. It's incredible how far this country is going at hiding the anti-imperialist movement and how much support it has.

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@alissaazar I didn't share it at first because it was hard to have an instant angle on it to break through everything else. Not fair to an important protest obviously, just less crucial to share than the IDF murdering 100 aid seekers.

I fear the fascist engine won't even pause for a million uniforms burnt unless we lay down in front of weapons manufacturers' gates and stop the wheels from turning

This #poll is for me to gauge how others think about a sensitive social issue.

I have taken a strong personal stance on it myself & suffered some backlash from a small number of people who believe blood is more important than anything else.

Would you keep on defending close family members who have raped & abused multiple women? When there's no question they're serial abusers/rapists of women? (And you're a woman, yourself)

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@msquebanh oops I misread the "and you're a woman yourself" at the end. Regardless any human who answers yes to this has some serious reflection to do. Your friend might do what she has to to stay sane despite her family, but that doesn't include demanding your forgiveness on their behalf.

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@msquebanh indeed I don't even think forgiveness is yours to give. My first question would be, what have they done to make restitution to those they harmed? If it was really so forgivable I'd be hearing so from the victims not the aggressor's sister (a fact I wouldn't tell the sister since they'd just try and pressure the victims into recanting)

uastronomer, to random

My solar panels have taught me some basic astronomy.

I'd noticed that, in summer, I was getting a lot less power than I'd expected. I had expected Summer to be a power bonanza, because the sun is higher in the sky and so much brighter, and also because it rises earlier and sets later, meaning more sunlight on the panels.

But instead I found there was a period of about an hour after sunrise and before sunset where I got very little power indeed.

Why? Because in Summer, the sun describes an arc of more than 180º across the sky! So even if you had the most carefully aimed array, on a mast to be above all trees and buildings, the Sun would actually shine on the BACK of the panels when it first rises, before moving around to the other side for most of the day, and then again moving behind them before setting.

wilbr,
@wilbr@glitch.social avatar

@uastronomer but Allen, how can something traverse more than 180° in the sky when we know the earth is flat? 🤔🤔🤔

Purportedly an article about the IDF targeting humanitarian aid convoys in Gaza, the author and the US mouthpiece being quoted nevertheless tie themselves into absurd knots trying to blame the lack of basic necessities in Gaza on "desperate Palestinians," "criminal elements," and, of course, Hamas.

Reuters:
"Israel Struck Palestinian Police Escorting Gaza Aid, Says US Envoy"

'Satterfield said the U.S. was working with the Israeli government and military to determine "what solutions can be found because everyone wants the assistance to continue."

'In addition to the threat posed by criminals, aid distribution is hampered by "the rising value of humanitarian assistance" leaking into the black market, Satterfield said.

'He denied allegations that Hamas has stolen aid and commercial shipments into Gaza, saying that no Israeli official has presented him or the Biden administration with “specific evidence of diversion or theft of assistance."

'But, he continued, Hamas has been using other aid delivery channels to "shape where and to whom assistance goes."'
