99.9% of jobs do not require urgency of any kind, really they don't. We've all had a boss who acts like someone will die if we don't hit some made up deadline by people who don't even do the job. No one needs their meal 1 minute faster or the paperwork before tomorrow morning. Your time off actually doesn't need to wait. Sometimes I think about how legitimately bad most businesses are at time management and hiring, and I wonder how they manage to exist at all.

starbreaker,
@starbreaker@social.lol avatar

@RickiTarr I make CRUD applications for a living. The closest thing to an actual emergency I've ever seen involved nuking a production database with an ad hoc query.

However, since I'm usually a developer and not a DBA that is almost never my problem.

So, unless I'm writing avionics software or software to control medical equipment or nuclear power plants, there is no such thing as a life-and-death emergency at work for me.

It takes as long as it takes and it takes longer if you annoy me.

@cory I've already been using this when tinkering with Flexbox and Grid. Unfortunately, we've still got to use margin when not using Flexbox and Grid.

@cory I'd rather just buy CDs and rip them. That way the musicians might get a few bucks from me, and I don't have to be jacked in just because I want to rock out.

@cory Did your cat steal the /s at the end of your post?

I don't think tech CEOs give a single little fucking shit about art, music, literature, or the humanities as a whole. To call them philistines is to be needlessly charitable.

starbreaker,
@starbreaker@social.lol avatar

@cory I dunno. I think calling them sociopaths is letting them off easy, and unfair to people who understand that something isn't quite right in their heads and are trying to counteract it.

I think these are people who have decided that the end justifies the means, and that it's OK to fuck people over, run roughshod over law and custom, and ruin entire ecosystems for their idea of a good cause.

Nobody chooses antisocial personality disorder, but these CEOs choose to be this way. Fuck 'em.

@aardrian As far as I can tell the only meaningful difference between Sam Altman and Sam Bankman-Fried is that the latter has been convicted and is now doing time.

@aardrian I didn't think that a meaningful difference, but I could be wrong.

2024-05-17 Have you ever written for other age groups?

I don't write for children, but preventing children from reading my stuff isn't my problem; that's their parents' job.

Besides, when I was 10 my idea of light reading was Stephen King, Anne Rice, Michael Moorcock, and Clive Barker. I sure as hell wasn't reading what passed for fiction in the 1980s and 1990s; once you got past Judy Blume & Beverly Cleary YA was nothing but the print equivalent of ABC AfterSchool Specials. 🤮

Anthony Comstock was even worse than you might imagine. His soldier-of-Christ, misogynistic work to punish the fallen and blasphemous never really ended, and now it is having a horrifying revival https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-comstock-act-originated-with-disregard-for-womens-lives-it-still-does/

starbreaker,
@starbreaker@social.lol avatar

@laurahelmuth Shit like this is why I think the French approach to secularism should be imported into the US. Public life should be exorcised, God should be consigned to his heaven where he can do us no harm, and religion should be as private as masturbation. (Don't do it in public or around children.)

"In 2024, for the first time, it finally feels like we have a critical mass of people and platforms who are interested in rewilding the internet to bring back what we lost, and create something new. ... There's a palpable feeling that this just might be the year of the open web."

is this feeling... hope? https://activitypub.ghost.org/day-0/

#ActivityPub #Ghost #fediverse #OpenWeb

starbreaker,
@starbreaker@social.lol avatar

@molly0xfff In my case, it's not hope but defiance. I don't believe my website counts for much, or that independent operators alone can break the spell of network effects and liberate people who prefer their digital chains, but the power of Satan compels me to press on regardless; every day my website stays up is itself a small victory.

Hi, @robb, I'm fiddling with #EchoFeed and I may have tripped over a bug.

I'm trying to connect my headlines RSS feed at https://starbreaker.org/feeds/headlines.xml, which appears to be valid (https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstarbreaker.org%2Ffeeds%2Fheadlines.xml), but instead of {{ summary }} grabbing the contents of the <description> element it ends up blank.

Has anybody else reported this?

Since @robb had written something similar, here's something I wrote about customer sentiment analysis last year.

📢💰We will run an experiment of drastically reducing the price of our monthly subscription from $4.99/m down to a mere $1.99/m. That's a 60% price reduction! Of course, the 30-day free trial remains, too.

To make the lower price stick, we'd need to get as many people to try Murmel as we possibly can.

Please, help us spread the word throughout the #fediverse. We'd love to get a boost from you. Please, smash that 🔁 button! 🚀🙏

Fair enough, and perhaps I was a bit harsh earlier, but I don't trust recommendation algorithms either.

One of the reasons I'm on Mastodon is to avoid recommendation algorithms, and since I know how to follow individual users' RSS feeds your service doesn't provide anything I'd value.

I'm mad at the trend of creating giant social media (open graph) images for blog posts that don't otherwise have images. They're basically ads.

starbreaker,
@starbreaker@social.lol avatar

@jbaty Yeah, they basically are. And they don't even use standard meta tags for their link preview, as I was telling @cory yesterday.

This is where I disagree with the #IndieWeb approach. The open web should not cater to social media; it was here first. Social media should be catering to the open web.

@cory My dad was big on ELP, Renaissance, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, early Genesis with Peter Gabriel on vocals, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, the Allman Brothers, and the Marshall Tucker Band. I got heavier and weirder from there.

He couldn't stand BOC because Godzilla and Don't Fear the Reaper got way too much airplay, but I got into them because of songs like Black Blade, Astronomy, ME-262, and Flaming Telepaths.
