Am I the only one who feels like still using employment rate as a metric for a healthy economy is basically just gaslighting at this point?

Employment used to mean you had a good chance of affording a home, maybe two kids, and potentially even on just a single income. Now you can have a full time job and still need food stamps or a side job just to pay bills.

Then of course, because salaries are so low relative to the cost of living, it makes employment numbers look even better because people who wouldn't have been forced to work now are. You have households where both parents have full time jobs, people with disabilities forced to work because they can't cover bills, students dropping out of college because it's now unaffordable.

Then some goober economist comes on TV and goes "well, unemployment is at record lows so obviously everything is fine"

Poverty rates are as important a metric as employment rates.

If everyone was employed but still can't afford the basics let along luxuries then the economy is failing.

As a Google user it feels like terrible timing to be cutting costs by getting rid of the people who give feedback on whether search results are good or not.

Well the Google Search results are already quite poor quality.

Perhaps they are just giving up on search as anything other that multiple pages of adverts? 🫤🤷‍♂️

So it looks like just about every company selling (renting, more accurately) software or providing web services is adding "AI" to the mix. This likely means that everything we do online is going to be, at some point, scarfed up into the databases the AI companies train their products on.

I do not trust corporate assurances that they're not actually getting/using this data, nor that everything will be fine in any case.

I never signed up for this, and I'm not sure what I can do about it.

I have been meaning to discuss this problem with @Gargron and the whole fedi community. It’s a far worse problem than many realize, and one that most prolific, eloquent, informed or funny posters have experienced many times. I think my proposed solution is sufficient to discourage the behavior. Anyone’s thoughts welcomed.
