If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

@molly0xfff It felt like there were more websites? All of them small and niche - really catered to a specific set of interests.

I was a mod on a Green Day fan site. I was a mod on a small fan fic website. I built a Harry Potter fan site and connected it up to heaps of other HP fan sites. I spent a lot of time on Neopets and Habbo Hotel. Forums! So. Many. Forums.

And all of these sites looked different and functioned differently.

Everything now just feels and looks the same.

@jake4480 Yes! Frontpage! I knew there was one I was forgetting! I think my timeline went Publisher > Frontpage > Dreamweaver.

My first site was a Neopets clone in Publisher 😂

@jake4480 haha I think I used it up until 2013 maybe? Then I switched to Sublime and then VSCode when it launched in 2015.

I did it! I did it! I DID IT! At the end of last year I told that imposter syndrome of mine NO and I applied to Screen Australia's Emerging Gamemakers Fund with my little game idea (Tea, Please!) and I GOT IT! 🎉

They told me it was a stand out application and they were so happy to fund my little idea! I still can't believe it and I'm absolutely over the moon! 😍

I'll be sharing updates as I ramp up development!

Here's my little submission video that details what the game is about!

Tea, Please is a point and click, story-driven game from solo developer Siobhan Willoughby that explores the contrast between the drudgery and noise of office life and the surprising happiness and peace gained through remote work during lockdown. This is expressed through handcrafted interactive life vignettes punctuated with the simple action of making tea.

So I'm dipping my toes into proper game dev and learning Godot and the way this took me 2 hours to do when in web land it would've taken me max half an hour kinda hurts. 🙃

BUT I'm learning! Will get quicker when I don't need to Google every little thing.

@skinnylatte I'm Australian so I've no real idea how US tax filing works - do you not have a free government run online tax filing option?

In Australia we have a website called myTax which is run by the government. It's free and it prefills everything for you and all you have to do is check that it's correct and add in any deductions you may have and hit "Submit" and it's done!

I'm hoping that's what Direct File is for you!

@csilverman Right? It feels like the fun in tech visuals has disappeared and now we're just in the land of the bland but sleek.

Nintendo are still the only big players that are still making their hardware look a bit fun I think but even that's toned down heaps compared to their 90s / 00s stuff.
