NEW EPISODE!

"Should SUV Ads Be Banned?"

Adfree Cities, an advocacy group in the UK successfully got an ad for the Toyota Hilux SUV that shows drivers ripping through sensitive natural areas and cities taken off the airwaves and streets.

We talked with two members of the organization about how they’re tackling the auto industry’s most egregious marketing campaigns.

Available wherever you get your podcasts.

ryanvgates,

@TheWarOnCars A great episode. The part about being in a public space without thinking about buying anything is so important. Are there any organizations like Ad free Cities in the USA?

ryanvgates,

@nixCraft I would add to what's already been said, context for why the change is necessary.

Florida has introduced HB 599, Bill that applies to all non-profits. It would effectively ban all LGBTQ nonprofits in the state. They would not be able to discuss sexual orientation or gender identity at all.

This is horrifying.

This would ban an organization such Equality Florida from discussing gender identity or sexual orientation in the workplace despite it being an LGBTQ org. It would ban LGBTQ community clinics from discussing LGBTQ identities. It is a blatant violation of the first amendment.

What is "condition of employment" and "other activity?" The bill doesn't say. Just like the original "Don't Say Gay" they make vague terms with large penalties to chill speech. The intent is clear though, to eradicate LGBTQ people from public life.

What did people think was going to happen when they just allowed fascism to casually stroll into the state with 0 resistance?

ryanvgates,

@skykiss Here's a link to where anyone can follow the bill. https://myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=79177

I'd recommend anyone in Florida to contact their representative about the bill.

Writing code.

Or

Reading code after three weeks.

ryanvgates,

@nixCraft Reading is much harder, especially since much of context of why it was written may be long gone.

We need to make the licensing tests harder + recurring more often, and a system where losing the option to drive is not a hardship. OR plate 551FPL

riding up a hill in an underpowered cargo bike with a heavy load, driver passes and blocks most of the access to my right turn into the bike lane, while a van is still in front of them waiting to turn left until the green light.

@enobacon You may want to check out https://upride.cc/. I've uploaded some videos there myself and found it to be pretty handy. I don't know if there are other options though.

    ryanvgates,

@enobacon They do have an advocacy section but I am not sure what they offer to advocates. https://upride.cc/advocacy/ I do agree particularly in this space open data is hugely helpful. This is especially true when many agencies(law enforcement, universities, governments, etc.) already have and use but don't share this data.

    ryanvgates,

@enobacon It's certainly a step forward not criminalizing people for substance abuse, however that's not going to solve the problem alone. It's really disappointing to see this done without psychological treatment, rehabilitation, job training, job placement, affordable housing, etc. People that are addicted need services not just not being arrested.

We need to have a talk, and I’m having a really hard time having it with my awesome hacker friends, because everyone is super duper emotionally invested and is deeply hurt by it.

I hope you all aren’t - because it involves all of us and it’s important. It’s not about any of y’all individually or your hard community work.

The talk is about how to make all of our cybersecurity conferences and events and meetups more accessible and conformable for young hackers because I’mreallysosorry, we’ve somehow become Old, and the stuff that we are ingrained with as “hacker culture” like movies, music, and memes all were created before they were born - and they may or may not have any emotional attachment or enjoyment of them at all.

That’s the conversation we need to have and that we are all responsible for and I swear it’s not aimed at any conference or person because we are all in this filter bubble of watching the Matrix and listening to Prodigy and remembering the hamster dance and all of that stuff while awesome was like a quarter century ago.

Part of building a community is thinking about including everyone and their culture under a mantle of good ethics and goals. So we really, really need to start having a chat about when we lean on the 90s hacker aesthetic and memories to the exclusion of people under 30. I had a wake up call hearing some students complaining about it.

    ryanvgates,

@hacks4pancakes I've definitely seen this individually with the references I'm familiar with getting dated or met with blank stares. I've had the best luck finding common ground and sharing a bit of new things from both parties. I've watched some newer funnier things I never would've known about. I think with conferences and meetups it means having inclusive leadership. Then make sure ideas and influence come from the whole group.

I seem to remember a time, now lost in the mists of unknowing, when we were strongly encouraged to use semantic elements in our HTML markup. Lists, articles, sections, headers and footers, shit like that. To make it easier to parse, you know?

Seemed to make sense at the time. I tried to do it in the code I wrote, as much as possible.

Welp. This is what React is putting out in 2023.

So long, semantic web. We hardly knew ye.

    ryanvgates,

@Green_Footballs Does anyone know if this hinders #accessibility ? I'd think it would be difficult to infer anything from just divs but I'm not familiar enough with tools to know if they could make sense of it.
