Oh look at that — BookWyrm gets mentioned in the Washington Post.

What is BookWyrm‽ —

BookWyrm is similar to Mastodon, in that it is an open-source'ish (with restrictions) social-networking platform for the Fediverse, BUT —

Rather than being about micro-blogging, BookWyrm is about books, tracking what you are reading, and sharing it with others.

Think GoodReads for the Fediverse.

Following someone on the Fediverse is broken — the user-experience (UX) is not good.

Especially if the person you want to follow is on a server different from yours.

Sure it technically works, BUT in practice it is broken —

I have done user testing with people who have used other social-media, but who have never used the Fediverse

Virtually all of them fail at following someone on a remote server

THIS IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO COLLECTIVELY FIX.

I'll explain —

The Web and the Internet are largely ephemeral — documents, images, and videos disappear all the time.

If you find something on the Web or the Internet and you value it — download it and save it.

is now giving money to the developers on a monthly basis.

If someone hosts a instance with will give a portion of the net revenue to the Lemmy developers on an ongoing basis.

As more people host Lemmy servers with , the amount we will be able to give to the Lemmy developers will increase.

( will do the same for every other open-source Fediverse software we host, too.)

Guess what — Mastodon & @bbcmicrobot are in the news.

BBCMicroBot is a fun bot that started off on Twitter in February 2020 — although it is on Mastodon now.

People send it BASIC code — and it runs it and posts the result!

Many use it to create "pixel-art"

BBCMicroBot migrated over to the Fediverse in Nov 2022, as part of the Twitter-migration.

"Twitter and Reddit may have only lost a few million users to Mastodon and Lemmy so far, but these are nation-sized numbers, comparable to what Scandinavia is to the United States of America. The incumbents have allowed the fediverse to reach critical mass. It's only gonna get bigger"

I think younger software developers don't appreciate how big of a deal was back in the day — and how important it was for the early mainstream Web.

The early mainstream Web — late 1990s and 2000s — was largely built on PHP — well —

PHP + MySQL + Apache + Linux

What eventually got called "L.A.M.P.".

("L.A.M.P." = Linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP.)

A lot of the explosion of creativity & culture & invention that happened during the early mainstream Web owes thanks to PHP.

I have a new Kbin server.

I am going to document my experience as a new Kbin user and sysop.

Note that I already have experience as a Lemmy user & sysop. Some of that experience may be applicable here, too — but we will see.

One of my favorite bots accounts is:

@africanwildlife

(Created by @stefan )

I love it.

You get to see random videos of animals in Africa doing their thing in the wild. Plus some nature videos.

...

Want to see a gorilla relaxing, here you go:

Want to see a waterfall, watch this:

How about a mother lion playing with her cubs, there you go:

Lots more like that.

There are people who worry about information, history, and culture being lost.

They want to preserve it — preserve it for themselves and future generations.

They try to save it — save files, save books, save articles, save photos, ... save anything they feel is important.

These people are called archivists.

Let's talk about

Akomma is Fediverse software — like Mastodon, Misskey, Lemmy, PeerTube, Pixelfed, and many others.

is a fork

But —

What is an "akkoma"‽
Where did that name come from‽

Why is the tag-line for Akkoma:
"magically expressive social media"‽

And what is the meaning behind the Akkoma logo‽
