Is the world a better place and the people in it better of by having more people on decentralized social networks (rather than centralized ones)?

(Regardless of whether that decentralized social network is the Fediverse, bluesky, nostr, farcaster, lens, etc.)

Let's talk about #Akkoma

Akomma is Fediverse software — like Mastodon, Misskey, Lemmy, PeerTube, Pixelfed, and many others.

#Akkoma is a fork #Pleroma

But —

What is an "akkoma"‽
Where did that name come from‽

Why is the tag-line for Akkoma:
"magically expressive social media"‽

And what is the meaning behind the Akkoma logo‽

I was curious how a Threads account shows up on the Fediverse.

I have seen Threads users on the Fediverse — but I noticed that when I tried looking up many people, they didn't show up.

Later, I saw mention of Threads users having to enable Fediverse.

This is how a Threads user turns on "Fediverse sharing" on their Threads account.

It doesn't take much effort to make your website join the Fediverse and the open social-web IN A VERY BASIC WAY,.

And by "VERY BASIC WAY" I mean — being able to look up your website using a Fediverse ID and have a profile show up.

I did it for my (new) personal website last night.

(Screenshot of the profile Mastodon shows for my (new) personal website attached.)

NOTE: DO NOT FOLLOW IT YET. FOLLOWING DOESN'T WON'T WORK YET.

...

All I had to do was —

Guess what — Mastodon & @bbcmicrobot are in the news.

BBCMicroBot is a fun bot that started off on Twitter in February 2020 — although it is on Mastodon now.

People send it BASIC code — and it runs it and posts the result!

Many use it to create "pixel-art"

BBCMicroBot migrated over to the Fediverse in Nov 2022, as part of the Twitter-migration.

Oh look at that — BookWyrm gets mentioned in the Washington Post.

What is BookWyrm‽ —

BookWyrm is similar to Mastodon, in that it is an open-source'ish (with restrictions) social-networking platform for the Fediverse, BUT —

Rather than being about micro-blogging, BookWyrm is about books, tracking what you are reading, and sharing it with others.

Think GoodReads for the Fediverse.

If you look at an HTML document that has absolutely no styling in a web-browser (such as Chrome or Firefox) it does not look good for many HTML tags.

If you look at an HTML document that has absolutely no styling in many eBook readers (that support EPUB) they look decent.

It would probably be better for a small-net web-browser to be more like an eBook reader than the major modern web-browsers.

The Web and the Internet are largely ephemeral — documents, images, and videos disappear all the time.

If you find something on the Web or the Internet and you value it — download it and save it.

Mutual Button

The Mastodon web UI has a new feature.

When you follow someone and they follow you back, the follow button says: "Mutual".

Seems like a nice simple feature that improved the user-experience (UX).

For better or worse, the Mastodon client-server API is the (de facto) standard client-server API for the Fediverse.

If you are building a Fediverse server — implementing the Mastodon client-server API instantly makes all sorts of Fediverse client software work with your server.

If you are building a Fediverse client — using the Mastodon client-server API instantly makes your client work with most Fediverse servers — even ones that aren't Mastodon.

I like that you switched to (also) using the new HTML5 tags on your smolweb.org website.

https://smolweb.org/subset.html

...

Have you considered adding the <figure>, <figcaption>, and <picture> tags to your list?

...

The <picture> tag is an improved version of <img>

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/picture

...

And <figure> & <figcaption> let you add more semantics when you are using an <img> (or <picture>) for creating a figure.

There are people who worry about information, history, and culture being lost.

They want to preserve it — preserve it for themselves and future generations.

They try to save it — save files, save books, save articles, save photos, ... save anything they feel is important.

These people are called archivists.
