indentation levels should be variable based on how important your code feels.

  • so classes should get 4 spaces, but then if blocks should only get 2.
  • a function should get 3 because it’s kind of important but not as important as the class, unless the function is really important, then it gets 4.
  • the main loop of your program should get 5 or 6 spaces
  • unsafe blocks in rust are so important they should get 11 spaces to put them in the center of your screen

One thing I try to tell people all the time is that management is not magic. They're just humans. Like you. But somebody has to do that job. Just like somebody has to do yours. Yeah, it would be great if these things were well defined by competent and effective managers. That's just not something you can count on. Just like managers can't always count on having a team full of competent effective engineers.

@polotek I find engineers who are constantly complaining about other people's skills are... well, they're projecting if I'm being honest.

A good engineer, instead of complaining and trying to tear down other people, should actually work to improve the organization's overall level.

Me: I never eat frozen food!

Also me: I love yoshinoya frozen gyudon!

I’ve now changed my mind to accept culturally relevant frozen food

https://www.sayweee.com/en/product/Yoshinoya-Cooked-Beef-with-Onions-in-Sauce--Frozen/2478?referral_id=4972487&lang=en&utm_source=copyLink

(Growing up in the tropics, we never had anything frozen. It’s more of a cultural bias from lack of exposure)

Yoshinoya is also what I spent all my pocket money on as a teenager, so it also makes me feel nostalgic even tho I can make better gyudon from scratch now

Genuinely I believe that most people (including me a few years ago) think they can’t bake or make bread because there are so many awful recipes on the internet.

Use a good book, or a great resource like King Arthur’s Recipes, AND a scale, and things get so much easier

petrillic,
@petrillic@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte Seriously, a scale makes a world of difference...

I’ve got a bunch of random servers hosting random things and I think I’d like to move them home due to increases in hosting prices. Anyone have thoughts on NAS devices?

I run software like PhotoPrism, Pixelfed, Plex, mostly

@skinnylatte I’ve had a 4 bay Synologt for … a decade? Same box. Bulletproof, reliable, tons of features.

I’d never put it on the Internet but it’s on my @tailscale network.
