This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

mmdolbow,
@mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

@RickiTarr the vast majority of spoilage bacteria (in food) is completely harmless. If you can make it taste good, eating "spoiled" food is usually pretty low risk.

mmdolbow,
@mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

@RickiTarr yup. Of course, that fact shouldn't be a license to be cavalier about food safety. A whole bunch of other stuff can go wrong and needs to be understood. I.E., Don't leave your leftover spaghetti out on the counter for days!

    So a Tesla crashed into a train now...and we all remembered when a cyclist was killed. If we're not going to have the guts to outright outlaw self-driving cars, can we at least have some sensible restrictions? Like maybe:

    • a warning light on the front when self-driving is happening, so peds/cyclists can beware
    • when not on a controlled access highway, maximum speed 5 mph below the limit
    • automatic disabling in school zones, construction zones/areas
    • tripled fines if over the limit

    Still struggling today, but hey, look at how happy my plants are. Aren't they total beauties?

    The aloe flowers a second time this year (I missed the peak of the flower last time but collected the seeds that I'll try to plant in fall, when the worst of the work travel is over.)

    Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

    Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

    I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

    Pros:

    This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

    Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

    It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

    I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

    We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

    Cons:

    Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

    While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

    We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

    mmdolbow,
    @mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

    @RickiTarr suburb of the Twin Cities of MN. Lived in the region since 2000.

    Overall it's been great: lots of economic opportunities (for white ppl anyway, see below), great music/arts scene, okay transit, good schools, Democrats mostly in charge (for now).

    Cons: plenty of covert racism, Trumpers in the suburbs and rural areas, large swaths of boring terrain.

    As much as we try to claim we're exceptional, I feel like we have a TON in common with other "swing states".

    There's this thing called Williams syndrome where people who have it tend to be very happy and outgoing and friendly, but it comes at a detriment because they can be TOO friendly and trusting and potentially end up in dangerous situations as a result.

    I share a lot of the emotional and psychological traits, but I know I don’t have it because there are associated physical traits and I don’t have any of those.

    Either way, there is definitely something going on with me where I am completely oblivious to any sort of threat or danger and, whenever my husband is concerned about a situation, he calls me "William" and I snap out of it.

    He's not making fun of me or people with Williams syndrome and it's just kind of a code to alert me to potentially scary situations and I’m so grateful to have him around because I'd probably be dead or trapped in someone's basement if it weren't for him.

    Williams syndrome for anyone interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_syndrome

    @mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

    @the_etrain @adhdeanasl it would be all kinds of fun. Like, "special victims" would be fellow dogs victimized by torturous situations, like a squirrel right outside the window or a treat given to the cat. The number of imaginary injustices are endless.

    Is piano a string instrument or a percussion instrument?

    mmdolbow,
    @mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

    @wernerprise @APBBlue @RickiTarr IMHO, all the "yes" and "both" are correct! The melody comes from strings, but the volume comes from a percussive action (banging the keys).

    In contrast, a harpsichord only has one volume, cuz the strings are uniformly plucked (by ...mechanical things?) due to pressing keys.

    In this sense, an acoustic guitar is also both. So... take all this with a grain of salt.

    I edited a demo video for one of my apps yesterday using a Microsoft product called Clip Champ—not to be confused with Elon Musk’s first Neuralink product, Chump Chip.

    mmdolbow,
    @mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

    @maxleibman what do you think about Clip Champ? I've started using it and like it overall, but my personal laptop just chokes on it because it's not high powered enough. So it's painfully slow and the audio track stutters while editing.

    mmdolbow,
    @mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

    @maxleibman sounds like you've found the same thing as me, although I assume you're on something with more power. I'm not encouraged by the fact that a higher powered machine still chokes on stuff.

    Having said that, Microsoft has NEVER released a nice, free, video editor for Windows (that I'm aware of) so anything is better than nothing.

    Re: my most recent reply in my thread about avoiding sweets and weight loss: I'm legit curious about the physiology I'm dealing with. If my main goal is to lose belly fat, and I'm NOT doing a ton of weight lifting (more cardio), I should be able to measure my progress with some weight loss, right?

    I've heard the whole "muscle is denser than fat, so you might get slimmer but not lose weight" thing...but what if I'm not adding a bunch of muscle?

    mmdolbow,
    @mmdolbow@mapstodon.space avatar

    @hankg no idea on calorie deficits... I'm probably making up for missing the sweets by overeating some other stuff. (At least for now.)

    Weight loss is only like a pound so far. I'm typically between 170-175. Goal from the last time I "felt slim" is 160-165, so we're not talking massive changes.
