Microsoft says it’s starting to test ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11. Ventoy (https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html) is probably the best new thing in all of the 2020s so far within the computers-administration/hobbyism/etc field.

Most people however seem to be stuck in the previous thought-model of converting .iso-files into multiple LiveUSB options on the same device (which is great!) with the ultimate variant of those being persistent saving of the state of each such LiveUSB option in a distinct .dat-file overlay so that modifications (e.g. updates, created files, etc) remain between use-sessions.
Well, problem is that .iso-filesystems are not natively writable because they were designed to be burned onto readonly media (CD/DVD/BD), so if one updates something that loads before the overlay, such as the Linux kernel inside the initramfs, then that just won't happen using the native tools such as apt/portage/yum/etc, so for such updates one will likely end up with at least a semi-broken result as the part outside the initramfs applied but not the part inside it.

BUT... Ventoy can also just boot virtual harddisk-files, which are completely natively read-writable!
For Linux, for example in VHD/VDI-format, using this https://www.ventoy.net/en/plugin_vtoyboot.html 1st-party plugin.
I only found that yesterday and it works. I tested using Devuan Linux in a .VDI-file created in VirtualBox.

    @AAKL @theregister @jessicahardcastle You don't need an escape plan. You need a backup server that is not connected to your active directory. That should not be news to anyone in the IT-industry. Offsite backups are a thing. It's not rocket science, the standards exist for over 30 years now.

    The plan exists and has been in place (and ignored...) for quite a while.

    Criminals will not spend their time hacking if there is no money in it.

    Which is why it is an excellent move to make paying ransom a punishable offense.

    A question for y’all: I’m a fan of https://polypane.app, particularly its linked scrolling feature. Is there a similar tool that lets you load two different URLs and scroll them in parallel?

    Example use case: you’re updating layout CSS to something entirely new, like moving from floats to grids, and you want to scroll the old and new pages side by side to verify the layouts are identical (or close enough).

    Habe gestern wieder ein paar Dinge geschmeidig via Ansible ausgerollt und Leute - das ist soo ein gutes Gefühl 😅

    Ich bin nicht immer glücklich darüber, wie ich mein Inventory pflege und es kommt mir vor, als könnte es mal in Chaos enden, aber dennoch will ich Ansible nicht mehr missen.

    Spart nach einer Initialinvestition enorm viel Zeit und Nerven.

    Gibt es eigentlich Datenbank-ähnliche Inventories?

    @hgdrn Wenn es ausreicht, einen Anhang anzuklicken um das System lahmzulegen liegt das nicht daran, dass Nutzer schlecht geschult sind.

    Einen email-Anhang öffnen zu können ist eine zentrale Funktion eines mail-Programmes. Wenn es die nicht erfüllen kann, ist das mail-Programm Scheiße. Wenn das darunterliegende System das nicht abfängt, ist es Scheiße.
    Wenn der Spamfilter das nicht abfängt, ist er Scheiße.

    Der Nutzer hat hier nirgends Einfluß.

    Hört auf, die Schuld auf Nutzer abzuschieben.

    @musevg @hgdrn Phishing-Tests produzieren schöne Grafiken fürs Management. Aber das wars auch. Ob 40%, 20%, 10% oder 0,5% der Belegschaft einen BÖÖÖÖSEN Anhang öffnen macht keinen Unterschied. 1 reicht. Und Outlook hat ja auch schon einige 0-Click-Angriffe geliefert.

    Der Anwender hat hier also den kleinsten aller möglichen Hebel.

    Deswegen spreche ich hier von Compliance-Bullshit.

    Zu meiner Einhorntechnologie:

    Ist die Mail signiert? Ist der Signaturschlüssel bekannt? Nein? Dann verwirf den Anhang.

    Kommt die Mail vom externen Server in html? Ab durch den html-Stripper.

    Signatur ausgehender Mail kann man serverseitig erledigen ohne das der Nutzer was tun muss.

    Mir ist klar, dass dann Leute jammern werden, weil ihr Outlook nimmer so bunt ist.
