In India, when you go to vote they mark a line on your left index finger's nail and cuticle with an "indelible" blue/dark purple ink to prevent voter fraud. This stain doesn't come off for a few weeks. What I didn't know is that there are several other countries that have also adopted this election ink and in some countries they stain the index finger tip completely!

It's 11 am here rn and already the temp has gone up to 38 deg C. I'm so glad that we left early in the morning today to go vote for the Lok Sabha elections. At 8 am it was cool cloudy weather and we didn't have to stand in the queue too long 🙂​

@elduvelle @kofanchen yes that. last year as well ddg had tried to launch their own AI-assisted search called DuckAssist but it was squashed by their rival Microsoft.

Now they've basically partnered up Microsoft via OpenAI - for their AI chat bot. This is so sad that they had to become friends with their rival -- all for a feature people didn't even ask for in the first place.

There are claims that the data will not be used for training LLMs but it all depends on how much does one trust OpenAI there.

Capybaras are a good counterexample to "cute things are just things with baby lookin features."

Tiny little eyes, big boxy jaw, big honkin chompers, they are like anti-babies except for being real lil.

It's so true :lolsob:​ I dunno about the Freud part but I really like the Meet Your Spirit Animal section. I think of it as a gut feeling - sometimes some task/project looks really enticing but if my gut tells me that there's no way I will make time to do it, I am only recently starting to say no to such tasks.

@grimalkina truly bonkers sounds absolutely right! when I was looking into why postdoc positions exist, I had learnt that this position was created primarily because there were far too many PhDs graduating than there were Assistant Professor positions available for them to continue in the traditional academic career trajectory. So an intermediate temporary position was created. What's worse is that present-day postdocs are called trainees whereas in the past they were considered already well-trained during their PhD to go on to become Assistant Professors.

I also vaguely remember that Assistant Professors in the past were supposed to actually assist a senior Professor whose lab they were a member of. I could be wrong but I believe this is still true in places like Japan.

As relatively junior scientists, some of us have talked about academic toxicity in the past only to be harassed, silenced, ignored, or forced to leave. I'm glad that someone in a position of power acknowledged the toxicity. I hope that the toxic hierarchy collapses sooner than later.

Us choosing a cooperative form of governance at neuromatch.social, instead of a typical top-down hierarchy, is our attempt of trying a different power structure. I hope that we see more of such experiments permeate throughout academia.

    @kcarruthers lovely! We've got lemons too! Or limes? I actually don't know for sure because we bought this plant from a local nursery over a year ago and both lemon and lime are called the same (nimbu) in Hindi lol

    Just a few nights ago we harvested one of them to make delicious fresh-lime soda🍹​but we felt that we may have harvested it too early, so there's a possibility these are lemons and not limes 😄​

    Apparently 's Web of Science, one of the major proprietary indexes that employers use to determine whether papers in a journal can be considered in tenure & promotion decisions, denied @joss 's request to be indexed without even telling us. This is not the first time JOSS has been rejected

    I checked their "objective review criteria" and JOSS easily passes all the qualifications.

    Speaking strictly as my own opinion, not in my role as a JOSS editor or reviewer, but as a matter of fact these indexers are a fucking racket.

    We received a desk rejection (based on an initial check) as we don't have :

    Editor titles and affiliations listed.

    @jonny @joss so they don't consider email addresses as sufficient contact information and want a postal address listed on the website (for a purely digital journal)? what kind of archaic requirement is that?!

    Anyway, if you don't have a biz address yet nor wish to add any personal addresses on the website (which is wise!) but still wish to be indexed by them, have you considered adding a virtual business address like those provided by companies like the ones listed here? That's what several purely digital companies and non-profits use.
