This is a minimalist PWA contact manager I've been building the past few years. It's a labor of love and something I work on every now and then in my spare time along with an amazing software developer. That's why it's always exciting when a new feature is added. In this case, it's two new features:

▪️Auto-importing Google Contacts
▪️Sharing contacts AND the ability for contacts to update their details!

It's free for anyone to use.

The SISTRIX SEO Monthly newsletter has quickly become one of the newsletters I look forward to reading the most. Jono Alderson writes it with little fluff and gets to the point of what matters most in our industry. I wish they published them online because I would link to them, so you'll have to trust me that it's worth subscribing to.

If the cicada killing wasps also appear in force during the double brood emergence, it’s gonna be quite an event. Many of them are burrowed around my home, and while harmless to humans, they look menacing when they fly near you.

Speaking of which, they catch and paralyze cicadas, put them in the ground and inject an egg into them, all while alive. You can figure out the rest. Just another example of how hard core nature can be.

For those WordPress peeps who have thrown their hands up in the air and cursed the Automattic gods for not including an ARIA label in the search input field and, therefore, can't get a 100 on the Lighthouse Accessibility score, here is your solution. Add this code to your functions.php file, and rejoice! And don't worry, you can copy the code here: https://gist.github.com/henshaw/9f08e1ec5e1ce6cbe902e9b1a353b40b

@aardrian the label is intentionally hidden. Good callout. I’ll update the purpose of (condition for) adding the ‘aria-label’ to the post. Thanks!

jon,

@aardrian hidden via CSS.

Here's an example. I reset it so you could test and see the Lighthouse result yourself. https://methodseo.com/discovery/robots-exclusion/

I created @smallweb less than a week ago and it's already posted 4.5K blog posts from Kagi's RSS feed. That's impressive. Some people have told me that's too much, but so far I really like it in my personal feed. It's a constant flow of new and interesting articles from a diverse group of bloggers.

@jon@henshaw.social avatar

A quick updated on @smallweb

I removed the #SmallWeb and #Blogging hashtags because the torrent of new blog posts was clogging them up. I also changed the visibility from Public to Unlisted, which keeps the posts in the feed for those that follow the profile, but don't add them to the Public timeline for the entire server that the follower is on.

We'll see how this goes and it will hopefully make the account a better fediverse netizen...err netibot.

• Early 2024 (Part One) – the Like counts on the Threads app would combine likes from Mastodon and Threads users

• Early 2024 (Part Two) – replies posted on Mastodon servers would be visible in the Threads application

• Late 2024 – A "mixed" Fediverse and Threads experience where you will be able to follow Mastodon users within Threads, and reply to them and like them

• TBD – Full blended interoperability between Threads and Mastodon

Google have now stoped Sitemap ping endpoint from working as they did advise they would be doing some time ago - https://seroundtable.com/google-sitemaps-ping-endpoints-no-longer-work-36692.html

Knowing this was coming I added an update field in my #11ty front matter that my sitemap picks up as a data point when building the site so that Google and other search engines get a true lastmod date - and they like that.

jon,
@jon@henshaw.social avatar

@simoncox I was wondering when they would follow through on that. I still used it for my @coywolf News sitemap each time I published an article because I publish infrequently and they don’t hit it as often as a big news site.

jon,
@jon@henshaw.social avatar

@simoncox @coywolf same regarding URL inspector, but Google News relies on the sitemap which only contains articles from the last 48 hours, and that ping service was the quickest method to have them discover and index almost immediately.

jon,
@jon@henshaw.social avatar

@simoncox @coywolf yup, that's exactly what I was thinking...assuming I want to try that hard.

@matthiasott

I'm one of those people that has removed them completely. I'm not a fan of UGC polluting content on my properties. I am a fan of having the conversations take place offsite and in the social media sphere. I also like the idea of using Webmentions or ActivityPub to display social activity numbers as engagement signals, and to perhaps even link to it, but I wouldn't want the posts to appear below my articles.

    @aris_tgd I'm pretty selective on which profiles I turn notifications on, and I'm quick to turn them off. There's plenty of people that I love interacting with for which I don't have notifications on. And while I'm like most people these days who have difficulty focusing, I don't have ADHD. At least I don't think I do.
