Real manly men drink their Earl Grey tea from their Cat Dad mug.

@danielle_r Earl Grey is my favorite tea. It's black tea leaves flavored with bergamot oil extract, and smells and tastes amazing.

There are a lot of bugs on the trail I frequently run. That’s especially true during spring and summer. So I’ve trained myself to always breath in through my nose, even if my body is telling me to get more air through my mouth, because a bug will inevitably fly into my mouth and down my throat.

Today the bugs still won after one of them flew straight up my nostril like it was on a mission.

@simoncox well, that’s supposedly the hang up with the Writers Guild. Studios want to use AI.

The rate at which ChatGPT has been added to software applications, even though it hallucinates and can degrade the functionality it's meant to enhance, reminds me of a virus.

@mariyadelano cold is acceptable but it’s more flavorful if you reheat it in the oven. So cold in a pinch, but hot if you have time to enjoy it.

New brain-mind discovery, but it still shows how little we know about how the brain functions.

I’ve been struggling to spend much time on Mastodon lately because my feed is >50% discussion of Bluesky

Seeing them makes me feel a terrible cocktail of:

  • FOMO for not having an invite
  • Confusion over why everyone cares so much all of a sudden
  • Fear that the wonderful community I’ve found here on Masto in the last 6 months will die because everyone will leave
  • Existential dread over the immense difficulty of managing a community-governed social media platform

It’s been tough 😖

@mariyadelano

Mastodon is what you make of it. And for me, it's a respite from the absurdity of the social masses on the other platforms. It's also a place where you use it as little or as much as you want. And if you don't want to read about BS or other topics, use the filters. And if you're annoyed by someone, mute or block them and keep moving. And if you feel like you're missing out on what your connections are posting because there's not algorithm, turn on notifications via their profile.

@mariyadelano ha! We can appreciate it, and I appreciate @rysiek for first putting that into my mind from this recent post:

One of the things I like the most about @Mastodon is the ability to use custom emoji. That is such a rad feature.

BlueSky is cosplaying
https://rys.io/en/167.html

> Almost exactly six months after got taken over by a petulant edge lord, people seem to be done with grieving the communities this disrupted and connections they lost, and are ready, eager even, to jump head-first into another toxic relationship. This time with BlueSky.

tl;dr:

  • seems designed to get secondarily centralized in the "reach" layer (as they call it)
  • moderation is an afterthought
  • Jack Dorsey

@rysiek good write up. I was intrigued when it was first announced in 2019, and I tried to follow its progress closely at first, but then it turned into a Web3 shitfest, and I bailed.

Excellent article on protein intake if you eat a vegetarian/vegan diet. I do most of what's in this article. A couple things:

If I run or weightlift, or don't get enough natural plant-based protein for the day, I will make a Vega protein shake and include two large spoonfuls of ground flax to add Omega 3 and fiber.

And as the article describes, not all proteins are complete proteins. Beans are great but they require other foods like rice to provide missing amino acids.

@torb that was poorly tested and communicated on their part. It was also confined to a specific topic (finance). And other publishers hammered them for it excessively.

I don't see them taking the same chance or changing how they write health content, partly because of the legal jeopardy that would put them in and partly because I used to work with that team, and I don't see a reality where that would happen.

This article seems pretty legit to me. That said, I can see why you now distrust them.

The randomness of @Mastodon is great, but the trick for better engagement with some of the people you follow is to turn on notifications. That helps make up for not having an algorithm.

When I Bookmark something, it's just for me.

When I Like something, it's just for me and the person who made the post.

When I boost something, it's because I want to share it with others.

There's no software in the background recording and evaluating my behavior so it can decide the best ads to show me, and what I should see or not see in my feed to increase my engagement.

It's pretty nice not being the product anymore and just enjoying the web again.
