a bird-loving mask-wearing total liberationist dyke from "vancouver island" 🌲

my veganism is for ALL animals from the tiniest shrimps to the 800 pound piggies i care for at the sanctuary 👩🏻‍🌾

into birdwatching, veganic gardening, native plants, natural medicine, activism, cooking/baking, writing, music, watercolour, diy, game dev & more 🥰

animal agriculture causes pandemics. you can’t love birds and eat them. there is nothing solarpunk about animal agriculture. tech will not save us 🥀

it makes me so impossibly sad to think that i may only have a couple years of seeing wild birds left with the way #avianFlu is going. but hey, the people have spoken: eating tortured chickens is priority number one, even if it drives an apocalyptic wildlife pandemic (and a human one, too!). healthy, delicious, climate-friendly alternatives be damned.

genuinely, what the actual fuck are we doing???

it’s absolutely critical that little piggies dig big holes with their snouts 🐽

An old practice from movements that I think we should try out for this pandemic: at the beginning of events, inviting audiences to call out the names of people who aren’t here because of the virus. Covid deaths, long covid, people sick today, immuno-inaccessible events, caregivers, etc. It’s so hidden, people think they don’t know anyone despite the huge numbers.

ivy,
@ivy@veganism.social avatar

@beandreams yes! i keep hearing people say "i don't know anyone with long covid" but everyone seems to know people who have recently just stopped showing up to events or fallen out of their lives for "no reason".

ivy,
@ivy@veganism.social avatar

@beandreams the slow feedback loop feels like a huge issue. someone i've organized with for a while got covid a couple months ago and has progressively become more fatigued, is constantly sick, and has stopped showing up to actions. i tried to breach the topic of long covid with them speaking to my (similar) experience but they aren't making the connection that it could be happening to them and they keep going out partying every weekend. it's so hard watching them do that to themselves, but i feel like pushing harder is just going to make them pull away. bleh.

@rose_alibi i came across this recently and thought you may be interested.

cow leather actually seems to be far worse environmentally than “vegan” (plastic) leather. some excerpts from the link below:

> Every day, an estimated 40 million litres of untreated waste-water [from tanneries] flows through major tanning country India and into the Ganges River, which people drink from and bathe in.
> More tanneries than any other business type appear on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund list.
> 95% of US tanneries now operate overseas to avoid environmental oversight penalties. The land under ex-tannery sites cannot be used for farming, be built on, or often even be sold.
> To make 1 typical cow skin leather tote, almost 17,128L of water is used.
> The farming of cattle for beef and leather products is responsible for 80% of the Amazon’s deforestation.

it doesn’t biodegrade:

> Leather does not effectively biodegrade. Not even according to the tanning industry itself, not even vegetable tanned leather.

furthermore, it produces more CO2 than the polyurethane alternatives:

> Even polyurethane synthetic leather boots and the impact of their supposed incineration at their ‘end of life’ (if they aren’t able to be recycled) emit almost seven times less emissions [than the cow leather alternative].

more information and actual green alternatives: https://www.collectivefashionjustice.org/leather

all this is not to say that plastic is a solution. it’s not. but i see a lot of greenwashing around animal products, especially as a way to invalidate vegan alternatives that aim to reduce harm. i’m sure that wasn’t your intention :)

on rapidly rising methane emissions that threaten the future of life on this planet

> Scientists also have ideas for reducing methane emissions from livestock. Some experiments show that changing the diet of cattle by adding fats or seaweed, for instance, can reduce the amount of methane animals expel.

absolutely INSANE. how many scientists does it take to realize we already have the solution??? we’ve always had the solution! stop fucking eating cows and stealing their milk. the solution is not to take years of research to make one of the most damaging, exploitive, unnecessary industries on earth slightly less destructive so it can keep chugging along.

these sick fucks can comprehend a world where life ceases to exist but not a world without their precious beef. the future is in the hands of some of the brightest people on earth, truly 🤡

Yet the Alberta government has not declared an emergency. It says it is planning for extreme drought but hoping for snow and rain.

Meanwhile Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party government has appointed an advisory body with no known water experts. But it does include Ian Anderson, a promoter of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion that will transport bitumen from the oilsands to the Port of Vancouver, criss-crossing many dwindling rivers, creeks and streams

eating meat or dairy is antithetical to being -cautious.

> Experts from both the UN and the European Food Safety Authority have previously identified industrial animal farming as the cause of most new infectious diseases in humans in the past decade, and have likewise warned it risks starting new pandemics.

COVID is a zoonotic disease caused by eating animals. if we want to support and folks, going is one of the single best things we can do to avoid a future .

or we could stuff our faces with dead, tortured birds while the avian flu continues to jump from factory farms to wild bird populations and humans. and veganism is ? sure.

the choice is ours.

i've been working on a #vegan myths project for quite some time and i'm really excited to share it! boosts ok! :vegan:

https://crow.cafe/vegan-myths/

it's a pdf of individual posters to be posted/wheat pasted/made into a #zine AND a companion website containing tons of sources.

i covered the vegan myths i've personally heard the most with a focus on #intersectionality. many of the myths have been echoed in #leftist and #anarchist spaces specifically.

i'm not at all a health vegan so more sources for that section would be appreciated!
