The bar for good moderation is, “Do what I would do all of the time.” Several #Mastodon admins are angry with #Facebook’s moderation practices, or lack thereof, and have elected to block #Threads from federating. They’re making a censorship decision on behalf of all of their users that will restrict them from access to content made by anyone on Threads, which has 70x Mastodon’s user numbers. It’s not what I’d do, but it’s why federated services are great. Don’t like a moderation decision? Move.

hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@bretcarmichael even though I agree with you on calling it censorship, the problem is, it's not that easy.
We've seen a lot of cases where instances are being blocked just because of not defederating with certain instances.
In this case, those instances that blocked #Threads might choose to also block those instances that refuse to do that.
There are people advocating for that.

Setup the sliding sync proxy for matrix.
Not sure what makes ElementX better than element at this stage. Glad to have it out of the way though!

@gabriel
I did it too a while ago, and then realized how much Element X is lagging behind in terms of features.
But it does feel much faster on iPad. the regular version of Element is horribly slow on iPad.

I probably will get hate for this, but IMO, I wish more Fediverse admins would raise their character limits for posts. This isn't Twitter, we shouldn't have to have "Post 6/27", just have a higher character limit and let people decide how many characters they want to use when they write a post ...

Some of us like to get our entire thought out of our brain all in one toot and not feel constrained by character limits ...

hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@kikobar @JessTheUnstill
It's not about that. It's about the fact that Mastodon is a microblogging service. It doesn't make much sense to post long blog posts in a microblogging social network.

#Mastodon (and #Fediverse in general) needs a way to verify the integrity of each post. Admins should not be able to manipulate posts by editing the database entry without being noticed.
#MastoAdmin #FediAdmin #Security

hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@Mehrad That's why I host my own email, WordPress and Mastodon. But, you're missing 3 important points here.

  1. People usually don't use an email service run by some random guy. While with #Mastodon that's how it is.
  2. You can easily use pgp to encrypt your emails. While it's not possible/practical to do it on public posts.
  3. There are only 2 copies of an email. On your provider and the recipient's. While on Mastodon it's on countless servers.
hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@Mehrad let me explain 3rd point.
As you probably already know, Mastodon stores all posts and media locally. So when you see my post, it means a copy of my post is stored on your instance.
This means your admin is able to change my post into whatever he/she wants and you'll see that edited post without knowing that's not what I said. And I'll never know my post has been altered on your instance.

Now imagine mastodon become popular. How much fake news that can create.

The #fediverse proves that social media is awesome and all the problems are due to ads, algorithms, data mining, centralization and the profit incentive generally. Do any journalists/researchers make this connection?

hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@wjmaggos there are also issues with the current implementation of #fediverse. Most notably the lack of any mechanism to verify the integrity of posts.
Your server admin can easily edit your post without your knowledge. Also admins of other servers can modify your post on their instance.
Can you imagine how dangerous that is?
That and the fact that admin can suspend anyone even without reason and without any prior notice.
As an admin, I say admins have way too much power.

@marathon of course there is absolutely nothing wrong with switching to Git. But why GitHub? They could easily host a git server or at least use GitLab.
