Hey #mastoadmin. We have an #instance for three accounts, but what do I have to do, to get a #federated timeline? Without killing our @mastohost instance due to too many requests?

Using relays is the only option.

Just throwing this out there: For my free lancing I often need to share passwords or other secrets with clients. (Or they with me.)

I usually suggest Signal for that, but obviously most people don't have that.

Is there a a good (and not too pricey - I only do very few free lance projects, so only need it once every few months) password sharing option for this?

I tried 1Password shared vaults, but even that is just too complex for many of my clients.

Open to self hosted ideas, as I have a server I could install this on.

Ideally a very simple thing where both my clients can securely input passwords to share with me without having to create an account (secret link and OTP, or something like that) and I can share links with clients.

Any thoughts?

hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@michael Doesn't bitwarden support that? if so, hosting vaultwarden can be a good solution.

the only thing that triggers me the most in #Mastodon is the lack of ability to search your own toots like why do i have to scroll down my profile just to delete my own toots?

also they need to have some sorting thing to display profiles without boosts

hirad,

@lime360 Removing the boosts from profile view is something that is already being added.

#Firefox sucks so much I can't use it as my primary browser on #Linux, #Ubuntu or #Android. (Sucks means crashes and locks up my devices when handling lots of tabs, which is how I work).

What sucks even more is that it's the only viable candidate that isn't #Chromium based.

Even worse, #Google is using this #Chrome monopoly to impose an ever more enclosed, centralised and oppressive web. 😱

Firefox used to do the job but went bad, got a bit better, but is now useless.

How does self-hosting a Masto instance work anyway?

Do I have to manually federate to everyone else? Do I have to make sure to keep up with block lists and crap? Rather not have to do that.

I'm pretty fine on mastodon.social but I've thought of running off sirtaptap.com just because I can

#mastodon

hirad,
@hirad@hirad.it avatar

@SirTapTap you can't federate with servers manually. It happens when you or someone on your instance start following someone on another instance.
There are also relays that help with federation.
About blocklist, you don't have to use them. Its completely up to you if you want to use someone else's, or just block any instances that you think deserve to be defederated.

    @passthejoe #Fedifetcher doesn’t support #Firefish yet. There is also less support for Firefish among 3rd party clients.
    On the other hand it has a very customizable interface and by default it doesn’t store remote media locally, which helps with storage.

    I've gotten 26 new followers on Bluesky in the last 24 hours.

    On , I've gotten … one.

    Folks, we are NOT doing this right if Elmo's cosmic screwups are no longer resulting in waves of new Mastodon signups. Folks like @Gargron need to be listening to folks like @kissane about how to break down the technical barriers and discourse behaviors that are repelling users, both before and after they join.

    Also let me add this too that quantity isn't everything. Social medias usually do everything they can to gain as many users as they can to increase their value and subsequently their profit.
    That's not what matters here. You might gain less followers here than on other platforms, but you get much more interaction from them.
    I think we should focus on quality instead.

    I had been using MS #Edge as a personal browser for quite a while, with #DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. I've now moved to #Vivaldi. My only gripe (for now) is that the built-in social media integration is not with #Mastodon in general, or the #Fediverse in generaler, but just with Vivaldi's instance. I would have liked to be able to use the sidebar for my own little instance, instead of keeping a tab open for it.

    hirad,
    @hirad@hirad.it avatar

    @muiiio you can. You can add any mastodon or any website to the sidebar.

    @Gargron Why is #Mastodon still so difficult to spin up? I've been trying for 3 years and still face endless issues.
    I run over 2 dozen Docker services on my home server, but Masto still eludes me. #Lemmy looks like a mess, but at least they have a Docker deployment.
    Even the joinmatodon homepage doesn't even mention #SelfHosting as an option.
    Are there technical reasons why Matodon needs to be built from source and run bare-metal on a dedicated server?

    hirad,
    @hirad@hirad.it avatar

    @jkn @Gargron if you want an easy method, I highly suggest using LinuxServer's mastodon docker. It's so much easier to setup.
