If you have a Vision Pro and like Star Trek (which you do, duh!) be sure to check out The Archive app. Lots of immersive panoramas of ship’s bridges (every Enterprise and a few other ships like Voyager and Defiant) and a few 3D models and walk throughs. #avp #starters https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-archive/id6472772587

I am now the proud owner of a Vision Pro. Admittedly, it's quite far away at present.

hanshansen,

@jamesthomson it’s hard to see, but the lettering on the glass facing sunny Union Square is multicolored film, so the shadow has beautiful subtle colors.

Wishing I’d chosen to pick it up at the Apple Store. Waiting around for UPS is crazy making. #avp

I remember a little over 30 years ago when I first got my hands on an Apple Newton, walking from the student computer store to the campus lawn, opening the box with wonder and just... experiencing the future.

I've probably had a half-dozen moments that compete with the technological wonder of that afternoon.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow.

hanshansen,

@TPOHolmes @kfury It was just you and me (neither Noah, or Mario were there). We arranged with a vender on the Boston Macworld show floor to buy our Newtons before the show opened to the public, and they were the first reseller to have them anywhere, and thus we were the first two people to ever buy them. By the end of the day we had autographs from Tom Clancy and other folks on them. That was also the day we got pre-release review copies of the Myst cd-rom. Good times. Alisa was always a bit grumpy.

hanshansen,

@TPOHolmes @kfury wow really? I remember that “calculator $699” line we thought it was so funny. I of course still have the Newton (and the box!)

hanshansen,

@TPOHolmes @kfury I think it might have been David Schwartz.

Midnight Solve is in the App Store for Vision Pro from my indy company Midnight Beep Softworks.

This app helps to solve Wordle like word puzzles between 3 and 9 characters long and with the ability to import work lists (such as urban dictionary).

While solving a puzzle yourself is fun, if you're trying to make your own puzzles and solutions it's helpful to be able to test them and experiment quickly.

Free with Tip Jar.

Some of the best trips I took while teaching at the Thai uni were those where I'd pick up my meager gov't paycheck, pay expenses, count the few remaining satang (so few) & take the cheapest train ride through the countryside to sit and read something like Primo Levi or Anthony Burgess at a ramshackle riverside bungalow. I miss that feeling of quiet escape & being cut off.

The Third Class Carriage (to Kanchanaburi from Nakhon Pathom). Shot on a much loved Canon.

hanshansen,

@ethanschoonover wow that’s a beautiful carriage

Baldur's Gate 3 is out today, and is listed on the Steam store for both the Mac and PC, but turns out the current Mac version is the old early access build. The real Mac version isn't out until next month.

Signed, somebody who thought he could play the final version today.

hanshansen,

@jamesthomson I got the Early Access version ages ago because I was excited that they compiled it natively for the Apple's M chips and Metal -- and it does run great. I'm okay with it taking a bit longer for Mac and consoles -- I have way too much to play and finish -- looking at you Link.

PCalc for iOS is 15 years old today, which does not seem possible. As the Mac version is just over 30 years old, that also means at some point very very soon, the iOS version will have been around for more than half of PCalc's entire existence.

If you bought it on day one, I hope you have appreciated the one and a half decades of free updates, and I shall direct you to the tip jar 😉

The About screen for PCalc 1.0.2, which is a lot less exciting that today’s.
The settings section, which isn’t actually very different, aside from the retro iOS theme.
The vertical layout for PCalc 1.0 for iOS, with a very different button layout.

hanshansen,

Does anyone remember that amazing video about the salad girl in the post apocalyptic world who thwarts an assassination and talks to the head who runs the city and he launches a rocket-phone so she can talk to her dad?

Trying to find it.

hanshansen,

@kfury Is this real or the result of time spent in a large language model?

The more I think about Apple Vision Pro this week, the more I'm starting to realize I want to see it go up in price, not down. I want to see the higher-end model with an M2 Pro or Max chip, with 64GB of RAM and 1TB+ internal storage. Give it on-board macOS virtualization, too. I don't think enough people have given this thought, but I think there is huge potential for higher-end models, especially as pro apps find their way onto the platform — the ‘Mac Pro’ of spatial computing

hanshansen,

@stroughtonsmith I totally agree with this, I don’t want some cheap Quest, I want the best. Pro all the way. (Not that I’m wealthy, but I believe in quality tech.) All the folks out there in the mainstream laughing at Apple’s expensive ski goggles wouldn’t understand my high end laptops, displays, and sound systems either. These machines are how I create my life.

I’m very sorry for everyone in the North East experiencing the terrible smoke. I'll never forget Sept 9, 2020 when the sun didn't rise in San Francisco. I hope folks discovering this effect of climate change remember it like we do. #smoke #airquality #climatechange

It's good that they've started naming Apple releases after regions known for recreational drugs. Once they work through wine, presumably they'll either go in the Humboldt/Mendocino or Kern/Lake County direction, and then we'll have a better sense of the vibe.

hanshansen,

@kfury @TPOHolmes @jongary @jimluther @danlyke maybe for the last macOS ….

@jamesthomson Wow the PCalc About has gotten really sophisticated! Is the fire powered by an M2?
