Some of y'all are still confused as to why it seems that Silicon Valley billionaires are "turning to Trump." That's because you don't listen to Black people, you disrespect poor white people, and you ignore obvious statistics that have been staring you in the face for decades.

Silicon. Valley. Billionaires. Have. Always. Supported. Trump.

Not because they like the tax breaks. Because they are more likely to be racist, and racism is the greatest predictor of Trump support.

@mekkaokereke I've always assumed that what the VCs really cared about was not paying taxes. No?

PDX folks, do any of you have daytime dogsitting services you'd personally vouch for? Deets in following post.

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@kissane I will definitely vouch for Pooch Patrol PDX, who have taken care of our cat when we travel for the last 3 years. Especially for anxious/difficult animals. I don't know whether what you're describing is a service Chuck offers, but you can ask.

Condolences.

Mike Karels of Berkeley Unix/BSDi died of a heart attack on his way home from BSDCon.

Karels was responsible for implementing TCP/IP on BSD, which was later ported to Linux. Since you're reading this, you are benefitting directly from his work.

RIP, Mike. We won't forget you.

My credit score went down when I paid off my car.

My credit score went down when I paid off my student loans.

The system punishes you for not owing money.

They want you to be in debt constantly.

Credit reporting agencies told me: "You should get more loans to increase your credit score."

Credit scoring is one of the biggest scams.

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@FluentInFinance I'll also point out that credit scores were invented by Boomers running the financial industry in the 70s, but importantly Boomers themselves were exempted from them.

Am I old enough now to present at an open source conference in a dapper suit?

fuzzychef,

@xahteiwi key question: can you afford to get one tailored?

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@sarahnovotny @xahteiwi Hey, good tailoring is shockingly expensive. Also time-consuming.

For me as a social scientist, being in tech is a constant experience of being really surprised at what so many people seem wildly certain about (organizing teams, contextless conversations about productivity that treat all individuals as interchangeable) and what people seem so wildly uncertain about (the possibility that there are often systematic patterns in human behavior we can learn from, the effect size of culture)

fuzzychef,

@grimalkina There's a profit motive at work.

Just watched the first episode in the 2nd season of Jodie Whittaker's #DrWho. That episode was a godawful mess. Does the season get better, or should I cut my losses and skip ahead to Ncuti Gatwa?

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@janl Jodie is fine. What I having trouble with is Chris Chibnall.

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@janl yeah, I'm ignoring the "all new Dr. Who is bad" replies.

If I'm going ahead, what episode should I skip to? Def. not watching #2 based on how terrible #1 was.

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@janl I think you're mixing up Jodie season 2 with Jodie season 1.

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@janl The spiders are from the first season of Whittaker.

@danhon @Viss This has been exactly Paypal's business model for a long time. For 99% of users 99% of the time, it's a super-convenient, easy international payment system. The other 1% of the time they screw up and ruin your entire life, but people seem to be OK with that risk.

My director told me about a conference that she really liked and wanted to sent some of our principal engineers to. It was the O'Reilly Architecture Conference... But unfortunately, it's not a thing anymore. What's your favorite alternative conference that's close to that one?

fuzzychef,

@hazelweakly Unfortunately, but the time I went to it, ORA-Arch was mostly buzzword bingo. What was it like in its early days?
