"[the Home PIs would allow access to developers to build a complex app to manage any aspect of a smart home], like turning on the lights automatically before the food delivery driver arrives”

can't wait for Postmates (Uber) to ask for permissions to control your lights!

it's an interesting exercise in how far and what people will trade for convenience (until, perhaps, the costs/downsides are visibly illustrated)

if the choice is between:

  • get food delivered and Postmates/Uber now has access to your smart home system; or
  • don't get food delivered

how many people would choose not to get food delivered?

@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@danhon very very few.

coming from computer security land, its INSANE. like absolutely fucking insane - the shit people are happy to trade for a microgram of convenience

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

@Viss oh yeah, I'm on the side of “people will trade convenience for practically anything" and am super interested what they won't trade it for. Presumably anything unconnected. Like, "Uber wants access to my photos?!”

@danhon lets make ai design us a 'trade your blood for discounts on your phone bill' and take preorders

@danhon @Viss This has been exactly Paypal's business model for a long time. For 99% of users 99% of the time, it's a super-convenient, easy international payment system. The other 1% of the time they screw up and ruin your entire life, but people seem to be OK with that risk.

@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@fuzzychef @danhon never ever under any circumstance leave money in paypal or venmo

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

@Viss @fuzzychef seriously, banking regs exist for a reason and anything you've left money in you're effectively treating as a bank and would be pissed if it suddenly disappeared

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@danhon @fuzzychef well i mean specifically with paypal, if they "decide they dont like what youre doing" they just take your money and freeze your account.

its happened to dozens of people i know and many more who are a couple degrees removed from me.

like if youre a massage therapist and one of your customers puts a cute/flirty note on a payment you may get flagged as a sex worker - and they shut you down and take your funds.

no notice, no recourse, no appeals.

I suspect the number of people who would choose "don't get food delivered" over "get food delivered and Postmates/Uber now has access to your smart home system" would be negligible.

Even with high-profile failures. Which I think is a tension between a paternalistic state that would regulate against even permitting those apps to have that kind of access.

@danhon I agree. I know people in industry and we are not necessarily unfamiliar with the underlying tech but they are so indoctrinated by the big companies. It's such a surprising thing to me when I find people who are willing to give up so much for a presumed convenience.
