Terminally online, mostly harmless.

I like old computers, retro games and combining the two with some vintage game dev.

My day job involves building web based things with PHP.

SD cards are the literal worst.

they've expanded to be the size of small hard drives, and devices like the rpi keep using them as boot media, but they:

  • use garbage tier low endurance flash cells internally
  • have little to no overprovisioning for wear
  • perform only the most basic wear levelling
  • have no protocol level integrity checking
  • have few internal error correction features, if any
  • decay comparatively quickly without patrol scrubs
  • do not perform patrol scrubs
  • cannot do PLP

@gsuberland what I’m hearing from this is that I should really, really not be using the SD card in my camera as long term storage :sootsprite: guess who’s backing it up as soon as they get home today?

@gsuberland oh dear haha. Yeah this is going on five years. Didn’t have a computer to copy it over to until this year and so it’s just sat on the shelf, forgotten!

@vga256 hey, I finally got to checking out your podcast (I know, it's been a few years) and noticed the subdomain podcast.vga256.com doesn't function.

I eventually discovered the new url and have thoroughly enjoyed the first few episodes with it becoming my regular gym listen.

Thank you for producing it.

Whoa, impressive animation project, featuring lots of pop culture references. 😮

Managed to recover a bitlocker encrypted drive using an Ubuntu boot disk. Nice!

carbontwelve,
@carbontwelve@notacult.social avatar

@WhyNotZoidberg haha. I did need to grab the recovery password from Microsoft in order to do so. Otherwise I don’t think it would have been possible to decrypt.

@zachleat i'm not sure if I have stumbled into a bug or not with v2 of 11ty.

Is it correct that in a project with just an index.md and about.md that global eleventyComputed value added via addGlobalData doesn't get computed for the index.md?

carbontwelve, to 11ty
@carbontwelve@notacult.social avatar

Omi. I released a new version of my Interlinker plugin https://www.npmjs.com/package/@photogabble/eleventy-plugin-interlinker fixing a bug someone had reported.

I then subsequently refactored the whole project and have begun down the rabbit hole of adding some missing features I have wanted for a while.

Going to have a go at compiling it when I get on a computer.

@carbontwelve@notacult.social avatar

@dec_hl haha I didn’t see those. I’m actually interested in how you compiled for MSDOS. A few years back I began a game dev project for MSDOS and found it difficult to source a modern build chain that could cross compile for 16bit exes.

I still hope I will one day manage to implement a notes links graph in my like @elly did in hers.
If you have resources on how to add that in a website, please share.

As I explore network thinking in a lot of aspects of what I create, being able to navigate through my posts in a visual way would add something really cool to my garden

Here is the current state of linking according to :

I kept telling 4yo it was chilly out so they had to wrap up warm. They refused. I eventually discovered why, when I asked if they knew what chilly meant they replied spicy. So when I said it was chilly outside they though I meant hot 😆

It always suprises me how recently some technologes that are everywhere today became viable.

LED lighting only really became economically viable around 2011.

I say it suprises me, but my grandparents lived through the invention and mass adoption of the freezer, washing machine, telephone, television and the internet.
