42!! Lucky number! NOT 84! (Even though it came out in '84, that's immaterial!)

The ONLY Macintoshes that ran at 512x384 were the 1990 Mac LC and IIsi with the 12" screen, and the Color Classic and perhaps other related later all-in-ones.

ALL MONOCHROME COMPACT MACS HAD 512x342 RESOLUTION SCREENS.

@RL_Dane bonus question: at which resolution did the Hercules graphics card run? People get this wrong all the time too.

But I won't give up quite yet. If the motors work, and if the head is good (it measures fine), maybe we can restore this thing and/or use the mechanism on the other drive. This will require partial disassembly of the mechanism and lots of scrubbing, oiling and lubrication.

The drive mechanism removed from the case, showing white corrosion and rusty spots. Lots of dust as well.

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

Oh yeah: If anyone in my bubble has either a Micropolis or MPI 100 track per inch mechanism in good condition: feel free to contact me!

root42,

@Zitruskeks as long as the stepper still works I have high hopes that it can be done, yes. I am unsure about the transformer. And the filters have to go anyway, I guess.

@root42@chaos.social avatar

If you remember: I have a CBM 8050 dual floppy disk drive with Micropolis floppy mechanisms. However drive 0 has a malfunction and is not working quite right. So due to the magic of buying two, I now have ANOTHER 8050.

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

Opening up the drive looks promising at first glance -- a spanking clean PCB! This is the advantage of the overhead mounting of the mainboard.

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

But disaster strikes when looking at the drive mechanisms. This unit was stored in damp conditions and there is lots of corrosion visible. Oh no... Plus, this machine uses MPI 101S mechanisms, not the Micropolis mechs that my other 8050 uses.

bits of rust on the microswitch of the second drive are visible.

To my and bubble:
Anyone else having the issue that a HD 3.5" drive (brand new Samsung SFD-321B) can read DD disks just fine, but won't write any DD image to either DD disks or HD disks? Is there any trick involved?
I don't have a DD 3.5" GW compatible drive...

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

Hm, it seems that the disks are marginal. I will have to try them in the Amiga... it's VERY hard to find useable DD disks nowadays...

New, by me: Two university students have uncovered a security bug that lets millions do their laundry for free.

CSC ServiceWorks provides internet-connected laundry machines to thousands of residential homes and universities around the U.S., Canada and Europe.

The students found that any security checks are done by the app on the user’s device and automatically trusted by CSC’s servers,

But CSC still hasn't fixed the isue — or acknowledged their findings.

@zackwhittaker this is today’s blueboxing. A bit sad to be honest… however as phone calls are now basically free, laundry was possibly the next useful thing.

The OCS version of Simon The Sorcerer is quite impressive! I only have the PC CD version here, but luckily ADFs are readily available...

@xadox no… VGA had 256 colors. Amiga 32 to 64-ish when using half brite mode. But the Amiga was a machine from 1985. so the achievement per se is pretty impressive.

Weird question: I've been working outside game development for a few years in automotive, but I've not seen, even in our OOP C++ code, the deeply inherited class hierarchies of computer games.

I think the deepest I've seen is three layers. Otherwise, it's all composition.

In games, I saw up to 9 layers of public inheritance in some places.

What kind of depth of inheritance are you aware of in your industry(ies)? Is the 9-layer-deep-hierarchy a game dev oddity?

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@fabs Inheritance is a terrible idea MOST of the time. It creates too many dependencies. I am not a super big fan of OOP anymore anyway. Can only take it in small doses now. Structs with functions usually suffice…
