"Right to repair has no cannier, more dedicated adversary than Apple, a company whose most innovative work is dreaming up new ways to sneakily sabotage electronics repair while claiming to be a caring environmental steward, a lie that covers up the mountains of e-waste that Apple dooms our descendants to wade through."

We need a very long, compound German word for the feeling here on the #Fedi of missing a particular account from previous-decade social media enclosures.

You wish they moved over, and miss them dearly, but deep inside you know it's not going to happen.

Back in 2007, Microsoft released "Why Is There a Server in the House? Helping Your Child Understand the Stay at Home Server", a children's book by Tom O'Connor with illustrations by Jill Dublin. The purpose was to promote their then-new Windows Home Server product.

This week, the @tunubesecamirio campaign has made a little (big) détournement of that publication, and released "Mamá, ¿por qué hay una pequeña nube en casa? Ayudando a les niñes a entender el tecnocapitalismo" ("Mom, why is there a little cloud in the house? Helping Children Understand Techno-Capitalism").

No Windows Home Server (or other proprietary bollocks) here: this is all about degrowth and technological sovereignty.

You can download a pdf, and find out more about the @tunubesecamirio ("Your Cloud Dries Up My River") campaign over here:

Petit Bardo is a project by Mikel R. Nieto.

It presents a series of sound works and recordings in which sound artists work with the listening act in existential finitude situations.

The artists were asked to create a sound work that can be heard by a person in existential finitude (in a relatively short period of time) or a sound work to be heard while someone dies or a sound work that the artists themselves would like to listen to while they die.

Btw, for those of you concerned about this #OceanGate thing, here's a list of 52.760 refugees and migrants who have drowned in the Mediterranean between 1993 and 2023 thanks to "Fortress Europe".

(And these are, of course, the ones that have been identified. The actual body count surely exceeds this number.)

Does anyone here remember the 2010-2014 global protest era? ? ? ?

All these protest movements used Twitter to communicate and mobilize their efforts. Now it appears all the visual material and links related to these movements are gone:

Oooh, ah, it turns out that a kind #custodian has been uploading data dumps from #Discogs, and making them available under a CC0 license. A good custodian, no doubt.

Thanks, @erazlogo, for the heads-up.

If you're looking for a set of tools to start your own environmental research in your area, @imvectech have put together an impressive resource: The Environmental Community Investigation Tools:

https://regist.ro/en/

It's a set of manuals and DIY tools for registering and investigating air, water, or soil pollution, as well as tutorials on how to do your own aerial photography, how to work with the collected data, how to work with media, etc.

They also have a repo with libre code over here:

(Re: this toot: https://post.lurk.org/@acousticmirror/110798418838425271)

Edit: "Gemeinschaftsverlorenheitsempfindungsmelancholie" has won by a wide margin. I was partial to the "Unvollständigeblasenblues" option, but it didn't get enough traction, basically garnering the same support as "Plattformmigrationsverlustmelancholie".

The people have spoken, and here are some possibilities. What's your take?

Since we had a bit of a @lurk outage last night, and since @pixelfed just rolled out their shiny and new Instagram Import feature, I took the opportunity to test run it.

Amazing: the whole process was smooth and easy. There are some limitations, of course: you need to manually select which pictures to import, and there's a top limit of 1000 images - but a couple of hours later, I had just over 750 IG posts from between 2013 and 2023 up on my pixelfed account:

@4n4st4s

Magic! So thank you, @pixelfed, for doing the hard work and making life so easy for us. Also, thanks to @NGIZero for funding the development of this.

\o/

Another part of the Pixelfed Instagram Import tool. Here, once we've completed the import, we are asked to review the images we have just imported.

The (man-made) environmental disaster in the Doñana Natural Park wetlands that @mcotsar just linked to might appear to be a local, Southern Spanish issue, but make no mistake: Doñana is a vital stop on the migration path of every bird colony in Europe. The repercussions of this will be felt all over the continent.

And, seeing how things are going here in Spain (spoiler: it's grim), international pressure might be the only resource we have.

How do you spell the gerund of the (neologism) "to mastodon"?

I'm at a loss here.

El Ruido es el Mensaje 27: «Espejo (((o))) Acústico» is now out!

Had a great conversation with Franco Falistoco and Gerardo Figueroa Rodríguez for El Ruido es el Mensaje.

P.S. I probably should CW this as "in Spanish". But there are also sounds and noises in any language.

A company named following the early-noughties convention of squishing the final syllable (think "Grindr", "Flattr", and othrs) doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

'Songtradr is a music marketing company that says it will "continue to operate Bandcamp as a marketplace and music community with an artist-first revenue share"'
