Don't want to trash your machine? Who says you have to? There are ways to keep it working. Some of them will even let you keep running Windows 10.

Thereโ€™s a site Iโ€™ve been trying to recall for a while now: a design-specific discussion forum I was using maybe ten or so years ago. One of its distinguishing characteristics was that users could draw their own avatars using an icon editorโ€”16x16, I think. New users were limited to black and white pixels only, but the more you used the site, the more colors you had access to. (They offered additional colors as rewards for other things as well.)

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

_ohcoco_,
@_ohcoco_@mastodon.social avatar

@vga256 @csilverman That's what I was thinking - what a novel way to encourage participation! If that kind of thing appeals to you, then you'll participate more, thereby (theoretically) creating a community of like-minded people :o)

Struggle should be, "I can't figure out how to make fusion energy work," not "I can't figure out how to not live in poverty despite being surrounded by abundance."

_ohcoco_,
@_ohcoco_@mastodon.social avatar

@scottsantens I've often felt that, aside from the obvious impacts to one's health and well-being, systemic problems like poverty, racism, misogyny, etc. hold a society down because people whose energy and time is taken up managing the effects of these societal ills are less able to find the energy, time, or resources to invest in their brilliance. As a result, we all suffer.

    @BlueWaver22 Hey. re: your reply to Teri Kanefield...

    There is NO difference between a response like yours and the trolling that so many of us (especially women) put up with on ๐Ÿฆ.

    If we removed your name from this post, copied it, and put some right-wing troll's username on it, who would know the difference? And that is the crux of the problem because there should be a clear difference. Instead of promulgating hate and harassment, you should be promoting thoughtful commentary and respect.

    We know the "motherhood penalty" is very real. Have any non-mothers felt discriminated against at work because it was assumed that you would have children (and thus caretaking responsibility) someday? If you have children now, did you experience this before you became a mother?

    _ohcoco_,

    @amydiehl When I interviewed with the local fire department, they asked me during the interview if I had any children (yes) and if I planned to have more (probably) ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

    I knew it was illegal of them to ask, but what was I going to do? Anyhoo, I placed 3rd and was out of the running, but still.
