    @ryanhoulihan Fun fact : Indian housewives have 11% of the world's gold. It's a tradition that the real property ( homes, land, farms) would go to the sons and daughters would be given jewellery in their dowry (still super common, unfortunately). Gold jewels are literally called stree-dhan (women's wealth) in Hindi. Basically, gold is the fail-safe for a woman - rather than be trapped in an abusive home, take a few gold bangles and run. 1/2

    Theorem_Poem,
    @Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan Now that women can actually own property, it is difficult to explain to our grandmums that we are selling their heirlooms to invest in a business or buying stocks 😅 I still have a bangle that my grandma ran with during the partition of India! 2/2

    Theorem_Poem,
    @Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan we understand that it comes from a place of utmost care that our parent's generation will traditionally give people gold at their weddings. At least now people are gravitating towards gold coins, not jewellery which can have design costs etc. It does look beautiful though! However, it is becoming increasingly unsafe to wear actual gold in public (look up "chain-snatching") so for most part it sits in lockers.

    Theorem_Poem,
    @Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan and I don't even wanna think about the masses of gold that are sitting in large temples and places of worship.

    in much of the world, there is this idea that some magnificent figure can be elected to finally solve all these problems the country has been having.

    in Scandinavia, i don't think anyone believes in that idea.

    a vote is a small nudge toward some goal.

    the way it works here, you don't all gather round this one saviour figure.

    the attitude is more that you nudge them toward things. strategic voting. the vote is not always about who should run the country. sometimes, it's just to give the politicians a hint. "you're doing it wrong. stop that."

    ideally, you don't vote for a person or a party. you vote for policies you want for your country.

    i feel this has not been explained sufficiently to the rest of the world.

    @thor I wish, wish wish India will someday get there. The cult of personality is so strong here. People deify leaders.

    @mcnees The one detail I loathed in the BBC adaption of Sherlock Holmes is that they made Irene Adler, THE Woman, a damsel in distress who eventually needed to be rescued. Arthur Conan Doyle had no problem having his hero defeated by a woman, nerdbros in the 21st century cannot bear it.

    Recycling in the US (and many Western countries, for that matter) is a sham. It always was.

    In reality, most of the plastic placed in recycling bins were never turned into new products.

    Now China has stopped taking that waste, the myth of near infinite consumption without the guilt of waste has been exposed for the lie that it always was.

    That's not to say that we shouldn't aim for a sustainable circular economy. Of course we should.

    But we'll need much bigger changes to make it happen.

    "For decades, we were sending the bulk of our recycling to China—tons and tons of it, sent over on ships... But last year, the country restricted imports of certain recyclables... Waste-management companies are telling [municipalities] there is no longer a market for their recycling.

    "These municipalities have two choices: pay much higher rates to get rid of recycling, or throw it all away.

    "Most are choosing the latter.

    "When [its kerbside recycling] program launched, Franklin [in New Hampshire] could break even on recycling by selling it for $6 a ton. Now the transfer station is charging the town $125 a ton to recycle, or $68 a ton to incinerate.

    "This end of recycling comes at a time when the US is creating more waste than ever. In 2015, the most recent year for which national data are available, America generated 262.4 million tons of waste, up 4.5% from 2010 and 60% from 1985."

    @Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

    @ajsadauskas @green so much of it is being illegally imported and dumped in India. People think it's being recycled, but it's actually being burnt in some desperately poor area where people cannot protest.

    @Jon6705 @ajsadauskas @green Google "illegal plastic imports to India" and you'll get dozens of incidents reported.

    Almost the only people on this website who act insane to me (constantly “correct” me with wrong facts, explain things I already know, misinterpret what I say/give it the worst faith read, give me condescending unsolicited advice, or extrapolate what I said into something I didn’t say) are cis white men over 50. There have been 3 cis white women over 50 who have.

    Before you jump in to talk over me again, boys, you’re not all like this! But the people doing this to me are almost all like you lol

    @breadandcircuses Personally, my degrowth journey started with working from home. I no longer have to commute 2x a day. I don't buy takeaway lunches anymore. And I don't have to buy special clothes for professional settings ( students don't mind me teaching in jeans and tee shirts or simple salwar kameez at all). I have time to cook most our meals, walk to the grocery store, and plant a little garden.

Everybody needs to listen to folks who feel threatened here and make this platform better for them. It's just that as of now, I am not putting my trust in billionaire-owned social media platforms.
