5 or so years ago alaskan forests were on fire and a split vote on the Dems side elected a worst case scenario GOP governor. while we choked on the fumes of our own trees, the gov took a blow torch to our budget, exploiting a provision that Alaska’s legislature can only override a gubernatorial veto of their budget with a 3/4 majority.

up in smoke went our state ferry system, entire university departments, many of our programs for vulnerable people. The only word for it was Alaskapocalypse 1/

It was so surreal to feel climate collapse and far right austerity politics converge all at once in one place and alter so many people’s lives. i kept trying to describe our new political reality to blue state friends on the phone but people didn’t seem to get how bad it was, how shocked I was about it, how scared I was about the future.

and then, life went on. we recalibrated to the new norms, got used to the losses, re-elected the governor. I bring this up cuz this is how it’s going to go… 2/

What feels like rock bottom politically and ecologically and culturally never is. It can and will get worse. And worse. Not everywhere all the time but in a lot of places, in unexpected ways, in uneven and unequal ways, we will sink and keep sinking.

and we will for the most part… just get used to it, we have to.

But to keep organizing, reorganizing, fighting, creating, we will need to radicalize our optimism to match the intensity of our descent…
3/

seachanger,

Because in a lot of ways we are & will be running on fumes, the fumes of our forests, of our old state apparatuses, and our will & ability to organize. But isn’t this when transformation truly occurs? When we get so tired (or fail so hard) one order ends and others begin?

I think what I mean by radical hope or optimism is the fierce love for one another that pulls us on when we get tired, yes, but it also means the joy and creativity and sense of imagination needed for designing what’s next! 4

Portland City Council has approved an inhumane new policy that criminalizes homeless camping. The ordinance bans camping on public property from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and introduces stricter rules on camping during all other hours. https://www.opb.org/article/2023/06/07/portland-oregon-approves-ban-daytime-street-camping-homeless/

seachanger,

@pdxlawgrrrl I’m reading this article looking for their plan for where people can legally actually go and hmmm not seeing it 🙄

The worst part about blooski is not that people are mean and traumatized from years on late twitter but that when i go on there I start feeling a little mean and traumatized myself

seachanger,

@BetaCuck4Lyfe I mean it’s a mixed bag and there are a lot of earnest organizers and people who work in real life for good things posting in there. But I think the pile on/bullying culture that evolved in twitter has warped many users brains, and people are quick to lash out or pile on as a result. Short character limits and quote posts make it really easy for conversations to go sideways, and the early algo favored conflict as well

seachanger,

@BetaCuck4Lyfe It is interesting to me that you do see some people migrating directly from Twitter and sort of saying hey, we don’t have to repeat bad patterns, let’s not be mean to people, etc. but between the format of the platform being pretty much exactly the same as Twitter and a lot of people I think being legitimately traumatized it is hard to break those patterns

Wildfires might be unhealthy and apocalyptic but they were our unhealthy and apocalyptic

seachanger,

@inquiline suddenly things exist when they happen to those particular places! 😲

seachanger, to random

Reminder that the increase in wildfires is caused by global warming which is caused by fossil fuel companies and we have science to prove that

Can’t get over @inthehands ‘s list of what Minnesota’s state Dem trifecta accomplished this legislative session with a one vote majority. Mind blown alaskan right here 🤯

seachanger,

@inthehands we recently gave a second term to the dumbest of dumb dumb oil company puppets, and a good session for us is when we can keep a far right trifecta at bay by a legislator or two. Never thought I’d see politics as bad as Alaskas the last 5-6 years

I still can't believe that 2010 me thought the issue was a lack of knowledge about climate change and all we needed to do was talk about it and educate people more.

seachanger,

@DameHolly 2002 me thought if people just listened to my ideas about bicycling as transportation we would probably get there 🙄

Mastodon online is broken right now

seachanger,

@kitbest sometimes it just goes down and we are cut off in various ways. it's back now tho!

fade, to random

Oh dear. Is mastodon.online flailing under some sort of overload again? Either that or no one I follow has said anything for over an hour, which seems... unlikely.

seachanger,

@fade Yeah, my home timeline is only showing my own posts at the moment

One problem with dunking baddies on corporate social media as a tactic for social change is that lead dunkers get high off the attention and then they chase that high on less bad people - cuz after a while they need the dopamean just to feel normal. At that point they are in the game just as much for the clout for their own account as they are out of a sense of justice. When these people are white male leftists watch for overlaps with garden variety misogyny

seachanger,

To me, the most effective dunking is when heavy hitters hit back, and then move on, aka Thunberg and Tate. They are capable of destroying someone with a single tweet but don’t make a habit of chasing Dopamean on socials, they’re too busy doing important stuff irl

From a systems perspective, habitual dunking for dopamean creates just as many problems as it solves, so i wouldn’t call it an effective tactic. And we really need effective tactics for social change rn

seachanger,

@williampietri I’ve been workshopping a blog post about it in my brain for too long lol

Tw death, racism

Woman's neighbor throws rollerskate at her kid's head.
Woman goes to neighbor to confront.
Neighbor yells racial slurs.
Woman "possibly bangs door"
Neighbor shoots Woman. Claims "stand your ground"
No arrests were made.

@ADubiousPronoun this is just insane, I am hurting for her family and feeling so angry that we live among so many racist gun freaks

Maybe it won't happen, but I imagine that in two or three decades, as today's kids suffer from diminished health due to repeated #COVID19 infections, some are going to wonder why their parents worked safely from home while they were pushed back into unventilated classrooms.

Study finds the greatest reinfection risk, aside from LT-care facility residents, is kids 5-17, who have 2x the reinfection risk as 40-59yos.
