It's 2023, and there's a US election in 2024 that will determine the future of climate change, war in Ukraine, the global economy, reproductive rights, and global fascism.

And folks still want to talk about Cambridge Analytica in 2015, instead of stuff like this:

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/democrats-scramble-reach-voters-florida-cancels-mail-ballot-requests-rcna91294

The reason you can't make any progress on:

  • Climate change
  • Reproductive rights
  • Trans rights

Is because too many Black folk are denied the right to vote. Focus on that instead of your pet issue.

And in Washington at least, fill out a form while making informed decisions, because the state mails to each household a booklet with comprehensive information about every candidate and ballot initiative. No voter needs to start from zero to be informed.

I just moved from Washington to New York, and I am appalled at how primitive and difficult voting is here.

Shopify is laying off customer service employees and replacing them with AI and cheaper contract workers.

I expect this model to apply to all white collar jobs including tech jobs. AI won’t replace people wholesale, instead it allows you to reduce your staff down people who correct AI errors and are called in when it’s more than a routine task. https://thedeepdive.ca/shopify-employee-breaks-nda-to-reveal-firm-quietly-replacing-laid-off-workers-with-ai/

Has anyone demonstrated an LLM or LLM-like solution that actually works for a real world problem domain? LLMs seem to fall into the "obvious bullshit" or "looks convincing from a distance, but still bullshit on closer inspection" categories. This my be tolerable for random chat, but not for mechanical or civil engineering.

Hey Fediverse - does anyone know how to work in Python (PySpark) or Scala with files that do not have a file extension?

I am working with a large number of tab-delimited text files that are produced by a 3rd party and which do not have any file extension.

For example, a file that would logically be called "customerdata.tsv" is instead called simply "customerdata".

In my notebook this works, but only if I manually rename the source file:

df = spark.read.csv("customerdata.tsv", sep=r'\t')

This does not work:

df = spark.read.csv("customerdata", sep=r'\t')

I'm hoping to avoid needing to rename all of the ~200 source files to get this to work. My public searching has not produced anything useful - can anyone here point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

New blog post: Introducing Microsoft Fabric.

For the past 18 months I've been working on Microsoft Fabric, including running a private preview program that included thousands of data practitioner users from nearly 200 customer organizations. With today's announcement at #MicrosoftBuild, I can finally share publicly about this work.

If you're interested in a personal and unofficial view of what Fabric is and what it represents, and in a perspective on what's important to focus on first that's informed from months of early NDA customer engagements, this is the blog post for you.

This week, Science published a stunningly irresponsible news story entitled "Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common" and claiming that upward of 30% of the scientific literature is fake.

https://www.science.org/content/article/fake-scientific-papers-are-alarmingly-common

Below, the first two paragraphs of the story.

Headline and intro notwithstanding, the story itself later notes that the detector doesn't actually work and flags nearly half of real papers as fake. Does the reporter just not understand that?

Is this change specific to the new "AI chat" functionality in Bing, or is there some other motivation?

I try to pick my battles but here’s a hill I will die on:

Remove all instances of the words “just” and “simply” from your technical documentation. These are marketing terms used to sell a product, promising ease of use.

Someone reading your technical documentation needs help: implying what they’re trying to do is “simple” will only frustrate them. Wrong audience.

SQLAllFather,
@SQLAllFather@techhub.social avatar

@tailsy

💯💯💯

Also remove these words from your technical vocabulary altogether.

Say the compliment out loud. I have some coworkers I really dig working with. I think that every time we do projects. So SAY it.

“I really enjoy working with you! We always get it done and it’s always super collaborative!”

Don’t just THINK the compliment. Say it. Then tell their boss.

    Is this guidance "Sign out of your Amazon devices such as Fire tablets and Echos" or is it "Sign out of any device that you have used to access your Amazon account, including Windows PC, iPhones, Android devices, etc."

    Apologies if this is clear to others - I can't tell from the available thread.

    Thank you!
