Hey 👋 dear Linux Community,

I'm still kinda new to Linux (started using this year 😅) I already made it to my main OS, even if I still missing some things which I used on Windows, anyway. What I wanted to ask you guys, what recommendations do you have for Linux Mint (Cinnamon)? In terms of security, optimization, (a way to make the UI looking modern ;-;) and privacy? I would be very interested in what you do guys to optimize your Linux setup :) I'm pretty technical, so there is nothing which could overwhelm me (probaly).

Thx! 🤍

@linux

Rush,

@beta_tester @voxel Mint uses Ubuntu's repositories, it's setup instructions are as such nearly identical

    Heya, folks! We want to start the new year off right, and what better way to do that than a new Solus release? That's right, Solus 4.5 Resilience is now available to everyone! A ton of work has gone into this release, including a new installer with , and a new Edition!

    Rush,

    @chris @gamingonlinux the term "Boomer Shooter" came from others trying to categorize Dusk, a game by New Blood Interactive

    "Boomer Shooter" then became a joke, being adopted by New Blood themselves and now officially having become a category on Steam.

    What do you like better about Mastodon and the Fediverse compared to other social media?

    Rush,

    @Alon other than the first and last points, ALL of those are on Bluesky, ALL OF THEM.

    From Server-Choice to Account Mobility, Communities and being (Partially) Open-Source, all of them. And if they're not already there, they are easily implemented.

    See the FAQ on all of this, which covers all of what I've mentioned above: https://blueskyweb.org/blog/5-19-2023-user-faq

    And also, the AT Protocol Website, which is what BlueSky runs on.

    https://atproto.com/

    Rush,

    @Alon

    that basically leaves the only things that are missing to be:

    • Accessibility Features
    • (Full) Content Warnings
    • Custom Emojis

    To which I say...are ableist, ignorant or did you not do your research on BlueSky? Accessibility is important.

    Rush,

    @Alon

    A content warning is just that, a warning of content. It doesn't keep people out when I decide that something that I'm sharing isn't for everyone and should only be viewed by those which want to, and you've offered nothing to disprove that.

    You can pick a server with BlueSky. the AT Protocol is designed to do that. No, your posts aren't private. https://firesky.tv

    Did not say they were, didn't say they weren't. That isn't related to the platform so I left it out.

    Rush,

    @Alon Infact, regarding privately posting on BlueSky, you cant. There is no per-post option to do so, there is no "Private Profile" feature. Nothing.

    Everything you do on BlueSky is entirely public.

    To elaborate on BlueSky and picking an account, refer to BlueSky's own blogpost. https://blueskyweb.org/blog/11-15-2023-toward-federation

    Oh, and moving your BlueSky Identity by design should move content too.

    Rush,

    @Alon

    BlueSky reached 3 million, the Fediverse has like 11 of those.

    Not to mention that you've moved from a Jack Dorsey platform to another Jack Dorsey platform pretending that you don't look like a clown for trusting the same person twice.

    Then there is also the fact that growth is accelerated by an invite system and artificial scarcity.

    Oh, and out of almost 3 million people, not even a million posted more than 5 times. https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats

    Rush,

    @Alon Not to mention what you've made is a strawman argument. I've never even touched on the topic of user count, you're using it as some sort of cover to show why BlueSky is "better" than what I am using and advocating for.

    Rush,

    @Alon Not to mention² that none of the content that often gets shared (see explore or explore>news) has content-warnings on politics. Quite the opposite, many here are very open about their political opinions.

    It seems you've trapped yourself in a bubble of avid idiots, including yourself.

    Rush,

    @Alon

    Essentially, you're just shilling BlueSky because you feel lucky enough to have gotten an invite code on the competing platform where nobody about the value of your artifically inflated invite code.

    Rush,

    @Alon great, all the Israeli users moved to a service that is easy to block and censor.

    Rush,

    @Alon if that was a reasonable premise as to why these tools shouldn't be made with privacy or empowering users in mind then so many good projects that empower people would've never seen the light of day.

    People are pushing back on the overly-centralized social media platforms, and this year it led to an explosion of exciting projects in decentralization. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/12/taking-back-web-decentralization-2023-review

    Mastodon seems like the place to ask. So I'm a little indie musician guy. I'm slowly replacing Twitter with here, I've been using Bandcamp but am unhappy with large corporations buying and selling it - so I got a Faircamp (no sales yet but I haven't been pushing it!). What are alternatives to other large sites. Is Peertube a good YouTube alternative? What about email? If there's one thing I've noticed about Mastodon -I know there's a whole world of ultra computer nerds on here, and I salute you.

    Rush,

    @limneticvillains

    if you're thinking alternative E-Mail providers, I can personally recommend @protonmail and @skiff

    @mailbox_org and @Tutanota are also good

    note that I am recommending these primarily on the basis of breaking up Google's monopoly and privacy, but especially Tuta, Proton and Skiff also offer some extra neat stuff that Google doesn't ;)

    I'll take this time to remind you to donate to your favourite projects. Whether that be Mastodon, your server admin, some NonProfit like Signal or the EFF; Donating goes a long way to help fund the work that these amazing people are doing to keep the internet awesome.

    Hey folks!

    Please do NOT report artists for sharing links to where their art is available to purchase!

    Just DO NOT be such a jerk!

    If you want artists to keep sharing their work on mastodon, this whole "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude has to stop. There is a huge difference between a big corporate ad campaign and an individual artist posting a link to their own art shop.

    Edit/Update: Well, this blew up. I'm muting now, and won't see replies.

    Rush,

    @kristinHenry I'm both surprised and disappointed that this happens
