@mojofrododojo @Lettuceeatlettuce I saw something really wild today. This dude had a Dodge Ram that was lifted… but the tires were small, probably smaller than the recommended size tire for the truck. He was vrooming through a downtown area rolling coal at people dining outside bars & restaurants. So cool. 🙄

Eh, crap, re-implementing stricter personal COVID-19 measures after just relaxing them, an (entire) family I know with COVID or recovering, after catching it from an older relative who was hospitalized--they later figured out, COVID-19. (ie Once again, moving back to "all indoor interaction in public N95" -- pondering where I'll go with outdoor in crowds.).

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@jlamoree @ai6yr So many facepalms. You’re in a hospital visiting someone who is elderly and sick. Whether they have COVID or something else that would make it even worse if they caught COVID from you, you should be masked, but also it’s professional negligence for the people who let you in to visit them not to even inform you that their illness was infectious.

I didn’t know Florida’s orange trees were all fucked up by disease and that they were barely producing oranges.

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@StillIRise1963 Neither does the governor of Florida. Why elect leaders who will address a real environmental and economic crisis when you could have someone who will just distract you with manufactured culture war outrage instead?

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@StillIRise1963 While DeSantis may not be up for re-election this year, Floridians may want to think about local elections and going for a US senator who will promote federal responses to this and their homeowners insurance crisis instead of attacking immigrants, librarians, and any regulation of the ghoulish health “care” industry that made him filthy rich.

More “record shoplifting” bullshit, targeting customers at their stores in higher poverty neighborhoods who are most likely to walk or bike to the grocery store instead of bringing a personal gas guzzling bag locker with them. @brinnbelyea @msquebanh Actually competent nurses tend to be pretty good at science. As a patient, I want a nurse who’s likely to pick up on it if a doctor makes a mistake more than one with stellar people skills. Solid people skills are definitely needed, but I think it’s selling nurses short to say they don’t need much academic skill or intellect. Schools could easily train more nurses without watering down science requirements.

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@brinnbelyea @msquebanh I definitely don’t want to see the nursing shortage get filled with more nurses who are so bad at science they insist COVID is over and you must have an anxiety disorder if you’re still taking any precautions against it at all.

There are no winners in a warming planet. Let your elected representatives know you want to see an end to subsidies NOW.

@ScientistRebellion It’s so completely ridiculous that we still have to talk about ending subsidies instead of flat out banning and then seizing the assets of all who got rich off them to pay for cleaning up their mess.

PedestrianError, to random
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

If using it requires you to download an app that allows a corporation to mine your personal data for profit, it’s not public infrastructure and shouldn’t be publicly subsidized. Bike and scooter share, electric car chargers, and even aspects of public transit from payment to information about where and when the bus is coming to scheduling paratransit are increasingly dependent on government shoveling money to for-profit app developers & tech disrupters. It’s not a good idea.

@taylorlorenz Love that last bullet in the article and how timid and apologetic even normally confident people get when stating the bleeding obvious that masks (respirators anyway) significantly reduce the spread of COVID and are a reasonable precaution in high risk environments (not just for “high risk” people) whether or not they’re popular.

If the suffering of Black people is invisible to you, then you miss so much of what's going on in the world. But if you can see Black people as entire human beings, then a few things immediately become apparent:

  1. Most hate comes from fans, not other players. Other players have only said, "Caitlin will be great. But even great rookies struggle adjusting to the competition level of the WNBA." Fans send death threats + racist slurs.

  2. Angel Reese gets much more hate than Caitlin Clark.

Caitlin Clark

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@ATLeagle @superflippy @mekkaokereke There’s no need to pick apart Clark. None of this is her fault. She didn’t choose to be the media’s white, straight, suburban darling, she’s just a young athlete trying to earn a living playing ball despite patriarchy. Considering all the racist BS she’s been a bystander to, she’s done pretty well at pushing back against it while living in a fishbowl she didn’t ask for. The media/society are the problem, not any of the players.

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@mekkaokereke @ATLeagle @superflippy I was responding to “she crumbles under pressure.” That sounded a bit like a value judgement, perhaps a bit implicitly sexist compared to how male rookies who have missed key shots are described. I realize that may have been unintentional and that your thread was about the media phenomenon rather than Clark herself, but offline & elsewhere online I have seen people personally insulting Clark, even calling her racist for getting attention she doesn’t control.

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@mekkaokereke @ATLeagle @superflippy I do think it’s important to recognize that there are human beings - quite young ones - at the center of all this, and that unfortunately cultural backlash all too often doesn’t fall on the people responsible for the initial offense (in this case white, mostly male sports journalists who are mystified by the concept of people actually wanting to watch women’s sports), but on someone who is not directly responsible but is visible & therefore easy to scapegoat.

You wont believe the number of stormtroopers theyre deploying against unarmed students unless you see it. This is just one side: at least 7 police departments with at least two layers at every point of egress, with several layers in back for rear control and rotation. They've got the army out against your kids for having the audacity to do whatever they can to stop a genocide

a wide (~50m?) staircase with maybe 20 rows of cops in full riot gear stare down a handful of unarmed students

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@Theblueone @ryanrandall @jonny Not just campus design, the whole US built environment. Every modern suburban neighborhood is designed for limited ways in & out and to virtually require car ownership to access anything. “Urban renewal” projects bulldozed neighborhoods where protesting residents could block off a street and have multiple escape routes for highways and buildings like these campuses.

@enobacon The other way of looking at DDACTS would be to recognize that where you build stroads (especially when you bulldoze pre-existing neighborhoods to do so), you not only get vehicular violence, you also increase gun, knife, fist… every possible type of violence as well as property crime. You can’t arrest or ticket your way out of bad planning. City planners rather than cops should have been the primary users of this data from the start.

I told y'all, cops don't do what you think they do.🤷🏿‍♂️

Black folk know this from lived experience. Some white folk only learn this when they go to report a theft or sexual assault and find out that the $11B/year NYPD are not equipped to handle that.

@mekkaokereke Cops love bike theft. It’s very convenient for them. It cuts down on bike ridership and reduces the number of complaints about their SUVs being illegally parked in bike lanes. They’ll probably now make a push for bike locks to be banned so bicycle users can’t protect their vehicles at all.

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@mhoye @mekkaokereke When I was hit walking in a crosswalk, two bystanders had called 911 before I scraped myself up off the street. The driver stayed at the scene. The cop who showed up coached her on how to lie about where I was when she hit me (because it’s fine to hit people with SUVs as punishment if they don’t follow all traffic laws to the letter while not operating deadly machinery) and threatened to ticket me instead when I said she should ticket the driver for failure to yield.

More mammograms are not a solution to rising breast cancer rates. We need to get to the bottom of why the anthropocene environment causes so many breasts to become cancerous and actually do something about it. Of course that would require giving a shit about the health and safety of people with breasts and regulating some corporations in ways that would restrict profits.
