I used to pass this building on my way to high school, every day for five years. I cannot condemn this attack hard enough. The Jew haters are coming out of the woodwork, and we have to show in the strongest terms: they are not part of the pro-Palestinian movement. They're what we're fighting against, just in another form.

And the vast majority of them hate Muslims just as much.

That gigantic racist, misogynist asshole is going to have to face down a room full of Black women are not only manifestly so so much smarter than him but who have power over him! Tee hee!

(I know he'll take this to the USSC, and those buttmonkeys will contrive an excuse to overturn the conviction, so I'm looking for maximum humiliation and damage to his campaign in the meantime.)

I think as a noob, I'm going to start with Mint and then slide over to Debian once I have the skills.

@bananabob @mdione @ehrba I was just thinking about that, actually, but I like that LM gives you access to almost anything already refined for #Ubuntu, but there's also reason I'm not using Ubuntu, and it's not the desktop design. What I think I will actually do is, once I get more comfortable, move to #Debian + gnome, but I need to learn the system way better before I can handle that! I can't even understand the instructions manuals for Debian yet!

@bananabob @mdione @ehrba Yeah, I like that option a lot. I think I would prefer gnome, for now anyway, because I've been on a Mac for twenty years now. I'd half forgotten that I can just do that: fire up LMDE and slap gnome(?) on it. But I figured out how to get pantheon file manager, so I can probably sort out a DE swap.

This stuff is so fun! The power to alter my desktop's functionality. I feel like a teenager.

@bananabob @mdione @ehrba Oh I know! Pop and Elementary are the top Mac-like DE's. They didn't scratch my itch. Pop is close but not quite there, so it's uncanny valley for me. And I don't like what I've read about how closed Elementary is.

Our governments are complicit in silence of condemnations against Israel's genocide on #Palestinians & some governments are still funding a terrorist, pariah, apartheid state of ongoing evil, racist violence on all Palestinians.

@RegGuy @msquebanh I've been trying to get a handle on this myself. I think it's a lot of things. It's arms sales. It's leftover guilt from WWII, but that's a smaller practical factor and more a rhetorical attack to get people to shut up and go along with it. It's evangelical apocalypse fetishists. I think the biggest thing, though, is colonialist racism. They hate Arab Muslims, and they love stealing resources. And if that's "wrong," what's that say about America (and Canada)?

@msquebanh @RegGuy @NoFlexZone I have to I say, I've been educated on this recently, mostly by activist Jews--a prof and a rabbi, to be precise. Here's what I learned:

Israel was founded quite self-consciously using settler-colonialist tactics. They had no illusions about what they were doing. It was the European norm at that time.

It also started well before WWII. Jewish newspapers were debating about the violence of those tactics in the late 1920s.

@msquebanh @RegGuy @NoFlexZone Also, some Jewish communities never supported Israel, and others were negative but occasionally flipped. There's never been a Jewish consensus. The idea that "real" Jews support Israel is an invention of hard-liners, Jewish and non--Jewish alike. That's why I have come to the conclusion that the common factor (not the only factor) is colonialist racism.

@NoFlexZone @msquebanh @RegGuy I'm not sure why you started with "but" because I agree with all of that! I mean, I'm not as into the Marxist framing, but when you're right, you're right.

Speaking for Canada, colonialism is as close as we, white settlers, get to having a culture in common. We react to critiques of colonialism as threats to Canada bc they are. We're a colonialist project. Hell, we started as a British company.

I keep seeing ads for suped-up laptops for #Linux, and that's great and all--I know a lot of people are really into just how damn fast they can download an update--but I'm way more interested in, "I got my MacBook 2007 to be perfectly serviceable with #DebianLight or whatever." I want to breathe life into an old piece of shit, not acquire yet another piece of tech I'll have to recycle someday.

I serve on my HOA and our President just called me and essentially cussed me out because I'm having a Q&A for people who want to run to be on the board because, in her words, "You could have just told people to come to me" and "You didnt ask for anyone else's input" despite the fact that I did and she just never responded to my email about the idea.

@msquebanh This is extremely important context. I keep asking myself why certain western nations are so enamoured with Israel, and sheer guilt is a huge factor. I think there are three others, too. There's money. Selling weapons isn't charity work. Weapons manufacturers are making profits. There's also colonialism. When Canada looks at what Israel is doing and hears accusations of settler colonialism and genocide, I think a lot of guts tighten in anger because that's what we do, as a country.

@msquebanh Any critique of Israeli settle colonialism is a critique of Canadian settler colonialism, too. So our government sides with the colonizers. A big big factor too, though, is opportunistic self righteousness. If you support this atrocity, and you're not Jewish, you can cloak yourself in faux decency, the original sense of virtue signalling where you pretend to be "defending the Jews" rather than supporting a genocide. It's exactly parallel to TERFs claiming they're "defending women."

@CStamp @msquebanh @Gurre @justafrog It was advertised as "opportunity" but practiced as exploitation, and the reason so many labourers from China and India came here is bc of economics and politics where they lived, so they went from one shitty situation to another, IMO. One was perhaps less shitty, but that doesn't excuse the conditions we made them work in. We didn't treat them like new Canadians. We treated them like a convenient source of cheap labour, and we still do.
