@rootcompute Wide monitors seem to be cause of another annoyance: Emails that don't fit well on mobile phones. All it takes is one graphic that doesn't resize, the whole content fails to display well. :: shrug ::

Post deleted because the little voice in the back of my head said "You know, no one gives a shit" and then the voice in front of my head said "Yeah, you're probably right", so I wrote this post instead which no one gives a shit about. That will teach the little voice in the back of my head.

It's often discussed how some management might not pay attention to employees concerns. But there is also another side, when employees don't voice their concerns, something that is bothering or making them unhappy in their position. I've seen it happen where people won't say anything until they've had enough, explode and then it seems like the issue came "out of nowhere". Complaining a lot won't help, but neither does never expressing concerns, voice them, if it leads to nothing now you know.

MysticBearPaw,
@MysticBearPaw@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink All true, but also true that power robs people of empathy. That is, problem areas are not perceived by those in power. Sometimes people have complained to me that mgmt keeps adding more work to the breaking point. I tell them that sadly mgmt won't know there is a problem until something breaks. As long you keep working more and more hours, they will think everything is fine. Just be careful in choosing what you allow to break. #management #systems #techculture https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/social-empathy/201909/power-blocks-empathy

If I want to use with desktop how do I do it? Do I have to have a security USB stick? I am not sure of the point of that. It seems easier to carry on using a password manager.

MysticBearPaw,
@MysticBearPaw@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jtb @ljrk Passkeys benefit Google (duh!) but the major banks and insurance companies will be slow to implement them. They are still using SMS-based 1-time codes and unwilling to adopt authenticators like Symantec VIP or even Google Authenticator .

MysticBearPaw,
@MysticBearPaw@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ljrk @jtb Google has received tons of positive tech press that they are single-handedly ushering in a new era where passwords will be obsolete. That's a benefit. I'm not against passkeys, but I think we are months and years away from critically important applications using passkeys. It doesn't matter that other providers will support passkeys if, for example, the largest banks in the world are slow to allow it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_banks

NatWest cash machine at King’s Cross station concourse has a skimmer on it, the machine has a phone number to ‘report suspicious activity’. So I call it.

Automated service which fails to work out what I’m on about, then won’t let me past without my NatWest bank account number, which I don’t have because I’m not a NatWest customer.

Station security disinterested.

Anyway, it’s on the rightmost one at 4pm on Sun 16 Jul if anyone gives a flying fuck.

@jess Even if you had gotten though to a person, there's a real possibility that they would not be capable of taking action. It's crazy but customer service lines do not want to receive reports related to cybersecurity. It should be one of many "early warning systems," but it's not. :: sigh ::

@mastodonmigration @catvalente This is an important essay. The leopard/panther metaphor is very apt. I'd go another level. A few years back, I was shocked to see 100s of Facebook employees marching in the San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade. Didn't any of them realize the collective harm they were doing? Maybe not. Afterall, no one works for a team called "bully trans people." Instead, people work in various units and projects that create tools that are used to bully. Threads won't be any different.

@gedeonm Yes, you're right. It's also true that Facebook has the technology to intervene and block creeps who create multiple accounts, but they don't want to spend the money on end-user support. Facebook has "super cookies", finger-printing, and ghost profiles to match users to multiple accounts. Here's a great article to share with anyone who might be a stalking victim. https://www.bustle.com/life/7-signs-youre-being-facebook-stalked-because-omg-there-are-so-many-clues-9236608

So I’ve got a very small online footprint. I worked hard to keep it that way.

Let me just put this here… it’s a good idea to Google yourself often.

I’ve noticed that recently web searches for my full name return ‘blogs’ and posts that use my full given name, have pulled content from elsewhere (another member of my family) and aggregated them into a weird blog that looks like something I would write, until you look into it.

The top result for my name is FirstName LastName’s Blog. It’s a weird micro blog on one of the other sites, with photos I took for my cousin at a convention, which he subsequently used on his own blog. Mashed together with some of his writing, and some incoherent articles about encryption and tech that look like I might have written, signed off with my name.

It’s almost certainly LLM/AI generated, but to what end? I don’t get the end goal for all that effort.

MysticBearPaw,
@MysticBearPaw@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@SecurityWriter At a couple start-ups in the past 5 years, we had something like this, but purporting to a review of our systems website. They scraped data off our real website and included biographies of execs. My guess was that they wanted us to pay to promote content, but was never sure.

I believe that everyone has the right to block whoever they want to block, but did they really have to go out of their way to message me and turn the blocking into a big riddle?

I have so many questions. Who is this person? What is it that I'm doing? What do they think I am exactly?

This is quite the mystery, and I fear it is one that will forever remain unsolved.
