Okay, Mastodon! I have a mystery for you. Can anyone tell me what exactly is growing out of the path to my backyard? If it helps, I live in , which is in , about 620.1 km / 385.31 mi north of Minneapolis.

(Sorry, no alt text since I don't know how to describe what I'm looking at.)

Please boost! Hopefully someone knows what this is (and how to get rid of it.) :boost_ok:

@msquebanh It sickens me that here are all these politicians—across Canada and around the world (oh, hai, Oz)—that make blatantly racist statements about Indigenous Peoples as if that was normal and okay.

And 999 times out of 1000, those racist statements about Land Title or Aboriginal Rights serve the extraction industries. Forestry, mining, etc.

I'm sorry you and other Indigenous folks have to keep hearing these things from stupid settlers.

Welp. Without thinking, I slurped the last beer off the edge of the can that I'd poured for my husband. Normal wheat and/or barley beer. I washed my mouth out with water and gargled several times, but I'm pretty sure that I swallowed the beer.

RIP digestive system.

Worst of all, it tasted really good! 😭😭😭

(That was about two hours ago. No nausea or gut pain yet, but I am hearing gurgling.)

My husband was heckled for the first time today because of his mask. He was dropping off returnable bottles at the Return-it Depot, and some guy also returning bottles started loudly calling my husband "dirty," "disgusting," "an abomination," and saying, "you're in Canada, take off your mask."

My husband just ignored the guy and kept sorting the bottles. Dude continues randomly trying to insult my husband, as well as going around to other people at the depot to point out the mask and rail against it. Everyone else ignored crazy guy, too.

The ranter was in line at the cash out counter in front of my husband, and starts complaining at the clerk, too. She was like, "THERE'S SOMEONE BEHIND YOU IN LINE, MOVE ALONG."

I'm still trying to work out the "dirty" and "disgusting" bit. 🙄

And this year, I'm gladly sharing it again...

IMPORTANT!!!

Here's an annual notice!

Baby squirrels [squirrel children is direct Google translation] running after a person and even clinging to their trouser leg, do NOT have rabies!!!

They do this out of sheer desperation because they lost their mother and have already been insufficiently supplied with food for days.

Baby squirrels are an exception in the animal kingdom!

When they have lost contact with their mother and therefore suffer from hunger and thirst, they gather all their courage and specifically seek proximity to people in order to get help.

These animals are usually injured in the snout after falling from a tree.

Please find a vet immediately!

WICHTIG!!!

Yeah. It wasn't easy to accept at first. But I found myself always saying, "oh, that bad thing Christians are doing, that's because they're not real Christians."

Then it finally dawned on me that all the bad things Christians do is because that's what Christianity let them do.

It was me that wasn't the real Christian.

I now feel more freedom to love people well than I did as a big-C Christian.

Having been 3000km in the last 4 days, and being a professional people-studier by training, I can say something with definite certainty:

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN THIS MUCH SICKNESS.

[insert acceptable oath here]

I HAVE SEEN SO MANY SICK PEOPLE.

SO FUCKING MANY.

It's just waves of illness out there right now. People staggering around in parking lots. The restrooms full of coughing and shitting and stuff on the floor... At night in the motels you can hear them coughing and horking up in their toilets. The medicine aisles in the grocery stores. Conferences where a quarter of the attendees are absent and another half are present and physically ill.

So many people with that pallid-blue-purple-red skin combination that looks like they were recently saved from drowning in the lake. (I assume it's an O2 depletion or a heart issue?)

It's really interesting that there is a perceived dichotomy separating intelligence from emotion when we consider the cognitive processes of humans and other animals.

There are no examples of animals we'd call "intelligent" that aren't also "emotional" -- emotions are probably the foundation of everything we describe as intelligence.

But, there is still a tendency to portray emotion and intelligence as distinct or even as opposite and opposed.

Larhanya,
@Larhanya@zeroes.ca avatar

@futurebird I'm pretty confident that the concept of intelligence vs. emotions arises from the old idea that men are intelligent (e.g., clever, brilliant, calm, logical, objective, etc.), and women are emotional (e.g., stupid, dull, hysterical, illogical, subjective, etc.).

I'd like to think most people now know there is no inherent cognitive difference between people assigned male at birth and those assigned female, and that behavioural differences (including educational expectations) are primarily driven by gender expression.* But...well...evidence suggests otherwise.

*Gender expression, of course, being subject to changes in cultural norms and expectations.

@futurebird Another thought! The comments here read very differently if you're thinking about #ActuallyAutistic folks. I'm curious about their perspective on the issue.

breadandcircuses, to socialism

I don't have any problem with a market economy, per se, but I do have a BIG problem with capitalism.

In my preferred version of state socialism, there is no accumulation of capital, and thus no capitalism. All large industries and large-scale services are socialized, owned by the people and managed by the state (or by worker cooperatives, where practical).

In my version of a market economy, people can own and run small companies, hire employees, set prices, make a profit... that's all fine. But they can't buy their competitors and either take them over or put them out of business. They can't open franchises, where they sell (or rent) the right to operate a different company with the same name. They're not allowed to buy their suppliers and create a conglomerate. They aren't permitted to grow so large that the market no longer operates fairly. And every business owner's wealth will be capped with a highly progressive tax structure (which is the price of using the commons to turn a profit).

So, the marketplace as such is not the problem. The problem is capitalism.

Larhanya,
@Larhanya@zeroes.ca avatar

@breadandcircuses And no shareholding except in the context of a co-op. Let's crash the stock market and never rebuild it.

But it certainly is a mess. I wonder how much Canada was motivated to take in Ukrainian war vets--regardless of background--because of guilt over interning the Ukrainians during and after WWI. 🤔

Not trying to excuse the actions. Just trying to understand. I'm also very aware of how powerful the anti-Communism movement was in both Canada and the US, and how many Canadian-born, far-right, actual Nazis there were in that period. ☹️

I've noticed a lot of people on here who have #ADHD work with computers. Computers never clicked for me and I feel like I'm missing something so now I'm curious, if you have ADHD, what do you like about working with computers?

    Larhanya,
    @Larhanya@zeroes.ca avatar

@PacificNic I was in government. Sadly, I did not get to solve problems all day. For a while, I had some independence to choose what i worked on, but then they shifted me onto business analysis, which is SO BORING that my brain broke. I started the position as a technical writer, which was sometimes interesting. I got to do some HTML, JS, and CSS stuff to customize the job aids I wrote for the online-style help system we used.

I'm hoping to get into policy analysis after we move to MB, and I'm hoping that will involve some problem solving as well. Of a different sort.
