Nothing warms my heart more than another website picking up the idea "Detect Missing Ad-blocker" of https://stefanbohacek.com/project/detect-missing-adblocker-wordpress-plugin/ (after seeing it on mine in action).

It's made for WordPress but the idea is so dead simple that it can be integrated in almost anything with some work (if nobody else did that work already :D)

@stefan @bekopharm I've just added this to my site! Thanks!!

Maybe my google-fu has defeated me, but I want to find a sample or template for 's based web application which has:

  • Basic Auth + TOTP or SAML authentication
  • A REST API using API tokens
  • An ORM for database objects
  • An admin interface for manipulating the objects in the ORM

I don't want 12 different howtos documenting how to write an insecure ToDo app using the framework of the week. Also, the same for 's .

Help me you're my only hope.

    I loved the latest Productivity Alchemy podcast with @jilleduffy, hosted as usual by @ksonney. Aside from anything else, I have a new magazine article author to read, but the general advice in the episode was great too. I'd never considered "double accounting" your task lists, or making accountability posts to the team chat channel to motivate you in the day.

    One standout comment though was Kevin saying "<website> is the second most dangerous site for me" which makes me ask... What's No. 1? 🤣

    Need some help! Okay, I’m running an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS VM via VirtualBox. After I login though, if I don’t do anything for a while, it takes me back to the login prompt. Is there a way to remove/extend the timeout?

    @kylewritescode check in /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc for the variable "TMOUT"

    i have this long term project I've been slowly thinking about for years to figure out how to help folks get more comfortable on the unix command line.

    I have this sense that there are a lot of people who have been using the command line for 5-20 years but still don't really feel at home there

    (not looking for advice, it's just something I'm thinking about)

    Oof so tonight’s gender expression workshop was just like, a symptom of how Kaiser approaches trans voice. I’m not going to sit here and say my voice is perfect, but talking about vocal anatomy and spectrographs and waveforms for the majority of a crash course is absolutely not how I would teach trans voice. And the SLP they brought in was a cis man who can’t really do a female voice. There was only maybe 15 minutes of actual applicable voice work

    @danirabbit I know it's not directly relevant to your toot, but over the summer I heard a podcast from 99% Invisible about how things were in the 90's for American Trans Women, and it really opened my eyes - the opening of the podcast made it sound like this was a "solved problem" - clearly it isn't. Thanks for making me more aware.

    @ksonney in your search for DOS based email clients from the 90's, did you check The Internet Archive, and/or reach out to this wonderful fellow: @textfiles ? (Also, I bet he'd be a great podcast guest... 😉)

    🆕 blog! “Should your phone be a webserver?”

    I really like this article from Rohan D "Every Phone Should Be Able to Run Personal Website". In it, they make the convincing case that phones are perfectly capable of hosting websites and - if we want more people to escape the walled-gardens - this could be a good way to get people back into […]

    @Edent I feel like this is something that could happen with IPFS and sharding of data across nodes... Perhaps?

    JonTheNiceGuy,
    @JonTheNiceGuy@toot.io avatar

    @Edent @atjn apologies for not replying sooner. Was at a work thing.

    I'm no expert on this... But, as I understand;

    IPFS is an alternative protocol which puts your data on many devices. You then index a reference to the data you're serving, not the device.

    Initially, you serve from your device all the time.

    Soon you may pay the network to host some of that traffic for you, perhaps you know you'll be off network a bit, so you want the network to reply if you can't, and so on.

    ~one billion
    ~1,000,000,000

    That's how many parking spaces there are in the USA. For every car? About 4 empty spaces... just sitting there, not absorbing the rain, making flooding worse, making cities hotter as they bake in the summer sun.

    Our built environment and laws bend over backwards to make driving the only viable transportation option in nearly every imaginable context.

    You need to pay for healthcare, but almost never parking.

    (Pointing this out makes libertarian heads explode.)
