@mike @JoeRess Darknet Diaries is great!

simon,
@simon@fosstodon.org avatar

@tkk13909 @mike @JoeRessi used to love darknet diaries but it's been off the boil in the last year or so. Too many recent stories about fraudsters, thieves and unpleasant people who sound quite proud of themselves (gollumfun and Sam the vendor for example)

piggz,

@JoeRess The last episode of @linuxlads contained a few recommendations

podsothoth,

@JoeRess try @podsothoth ! It’s on Mastodon!

@JoeRess I know #Redhat is on everyone's evil list right now and it's ended but I really enjoyed Command Line Heroes. The history of open source and computers in general absolute fascinate me.

@JoeRess If you’re into old computer games I highly recommend @dosgameclub - very entertaining and a lot of trivia per game/episode.

okapi,

@JoeRess Open Source Security Podcast, PING (produced by APNIC), FLOSS weekly, Bad Voltage. For non tech, on the Rest is Politics they share your disdain for Brexit.

@JoeRess

Let's see here.

99% Invisible is fantastic. It's about design and architecture, but it branches out into so much more, reflecting on how design has impacted our lives and how life impacts design. A particular favorite of mine is A Whale-oiled machine.

The Memory Palace is short stories each based on a non-fiction event. It's really compelling and only a few minutes long. Some of them can be quite emotional, so it's good that they're sub-15 minutes. A favorite episode of mine is Butterflies.

Outside/In is about the natural world and how we use it. A good environmental podcast. I liked the episode Just Try not to Breathe.

The Disappearing Spoon is a science history podcast. Every episode goes over a discovery, event, trend or person, and they can be phenomenal. The episode that stuck with me the most is Death by Nutrition, but this episode also starts out with a pretty graphic description of disease. Another great (and slightly less graphic) episode is The Seeds of Starvation.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. It's a history podcast with multi-hour episodes that cover broad topics. The Supernova in the East series is like 12 hours long but it is great, with elements that will stick with you for a good while.

Sidedoor, which is by the Smithsonian, and tells the story of interesting elements of their collection.

And then there's a few honorable mentions.

Lingthusiasm, about linguistics.

Criminal, which is true crime that goes beyond the "it could happen to you!" messaging.

The Moth, which is people's stories. It's apparently got a strong national community and the podcast broadcasts the best stories out of hundreds.

Freakonomics Radio, by an economist, and about the social forces that shape our lives. It's a lot less dry than I thought it'd be.

The Anthropocene Reviewed, by the author John Green. He reviews random things on a five-star scale. From orbital sunrises to a specific Ginkgo Biloba tree from his childhood. It's philosophical and tongue-in-cheek in a very sweet way.

Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot of stuff. Today the Empire's loot sits in museums, galleries, private collections and burial sites with polite plaques. But its history is often me...

arcticfox,

@JoeRess I really like the freakonomics family of podcasts! Really good way to take a break from tech, style very much resembles their books.

tyr,

@JoeRess

The Rest is History is good if you like history.

A good tech one is Darknet Dairies.

A good general long form interview one is Jordan Harbinger Show.

A daily show that is AI generated that is ok is Hacker News Recap by Wondercraft.

@JoeRess Asides from your own series of podcasts, I've been enjoying @techtales via https://techtalesshow.com/

The podcast has covered a variety of older and more recent tech stories, such as The Voyager Program, Internet Explorer's rise and fall, Duke Nukem Forever, the explosive Galaxy Note 7, etc.
