@fredonline I'm guessing a desire to milk the sense of nostalgia for a couple bucks to pad their bottom line. I vaguely remember watching it, but couldn't tell you anything about it. If I remember correctly I think they destroyed the van, but don't hold me to that.

I get that this is supposedly "stored locally" and encrypted, but I don't trust this even the slightest bit. I don't trust that Microsoft can keep its greedy mitts off that data.

When I was 18 and going to University, I applied for student aid because my parents weren't rich enough to help out. I was denied because I had outstanding debt. From when I was 16 months old. It took a while to get that sorted.

Look. I have kids. Quite a few of them. I love them, and I think they're downright adorable. Regardless, you won't ever see them until they're adults. I talk to them about privacy, and the risks of online life. I think it's important.

@Craktok Someone else had used my social security number to take out multiple outstanding loans. When I applied for loans, that was the first time I learned of them. I don't know who it was (though I do have my suspicions), and I had to prove to the financial industry that it wasn't really MY debt.

Ooo, I'm sure my kids would have LOVED that.

@Craktok It wasn't great for sure, but I got through it and I'd like to think my kids are reaping the benefits of my experience. They may disagree. 😏

A few years ago, my kid wanted to be a scientist. And then he wanted to be a coder like Mummy. So proud.

Anyhoo now he wants to be a YouTuber so he "can play games and make money with ads".

Ooookay.

mike,

@lulu_powerful One of my sons wants to be a YouTuber too. He doesn't want to make videos, but he wants to have a channel and stuff. Basically I think he wants to push a button when he's starting to play games and then have his mom and I edit it for him and post it for him and do all that stuff.

After 30+ years in tech (Unix, Linux, IT Security), my time in tech might be over. It took me 2.5 years to finally get hired for the job that I just lost yesterday. Not sure I want to go through that again. That was rougher than rough and just about ended me.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@cmccullough Sorry to hear that. Sucks. If you move out of tech, what kind of work would you want to do?

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@cmccullough I've had similar thoughts. I'm pushing 50 here, and I've been doing computer work since my teens. It really used to be more fun, but these days when the clock strikes quittin time, I can't get away from my keyboard fast enough. I've had the thought that it might be time to get into another career path, but I honestly haven't the foggiest what that would be.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@cmccullough In my youth I entertained the idea that maybe someone would pay me to write someday. It didn't take long to realize that I'm kinda a garbage writer, so the odds of that happening are pretty minimal. No, I think I'm going to have to tough it out until my kids are all out of school and then maybe I'll get a job as a Walmart greeter or something.

I'm getting rate limited for some reason am I the only one?

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel Rate limits do exist, but they're set so high that most of the time no one will see them. I've seen them before myself, but only when I had several apps on my phone and more than one or two tabs open to Fosstodon.

📋ADHDers love curating Reading Lists to stay on track.

🫣Going back to them, though, is another story.

Have you tried giving yourself little rewards when you check off read items from the list? Because they totally count as mini victories! 🥳

It's true that neurodivergent minds are energized and motivated when they set and execute goals, gain achievements, communicate, create, strategize, innovate, or serve and connect with people.

But the constant whirlwind of killer ideas and endless possibilities, without the reigns of process, structure, and execution, can get debilitating.

🧰 To help you crush those distractions, we've curated a list of helpful tools available for you to use on our browser.

Building systems and leveraging productivity tools can set you up for success and manage your scattered thoughts.

Our built-in Reading List is one such example, read the blog for more👇

15-second video of the Vivaldi browser’s built-in Reading List feature.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@Vivaldi The built in reading list is an amazing feature. Recently you've added the ability to share links directly to the reading list, which is a fantastic addition. I love being able to add a link from any app (usually my feed reader) on my phone easily to the reading list and just pick it up and read it next time I'm on my computer or tablet.

@Vivaldi I don't have ADHD, but I use almost all of those features. is amazing in helping me stay organized and cutting out external distractions. There's just no other tool like it.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@beardedtechguy Well, I'm a tab guy, so on any given day I have easily 100+ tabs open. You can imagine then that any tab management feature gets extensive use. Workspaces was like a feature built just for me. I have a workspace for work, and one for school, and one for Fosstodon (where I spend a great deal of time), etc. I've setup Workspace Rules, so I have to be less diligent when opening new tabs and they still end up in the correct Workspaces. Amazing feature. Love it.

@Vivaldi

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@beardedtechguy Absolutely! In fact, when I open a new tab from an existing one, I automatically stack them. That way I'm grouping tabs that are associated without having to think about it. It lets me move groups of tabs easily between workspaces and they don't take up all the space in my tab bar. It also lets me close whole groups when I'm done with a particular task rather than having to deal with each individual tab. It doesn't sound like a lot, but all that time adds up!

@Vivaldi

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@beardedtechguy Vivaldi has done a spectacular job just locking me into their browser. I use it for so much I don't even know where I'd begin with a different one. Another example is the Panel. As an admin of an instance, I spend a LOT of time here on Mastodon, and I'm constantly looking stuff up and taking notes. Something that I'm sure has been there forever and I never noticed is the ability to drag text from the active tab to a panel. Works AMAZINGLY for notes and translating.

An American friend of mine thinks beans on toast is disgusting. So to all none Brits (as we find it delicious)…is it disgusting to you?

Side note - I find it astonishing that someone from the country that invented “cheese in a can” can find this “dish” disgusting. 😂

@kev Never tried it, but I've seen worse things for sure. It's not super far off a chili-cheese hotdog.

Hey @Vivaldi, what's the chances I could get a "Watch Tab" feature added? Have a configurable periodic reload (already a feature obviously) in the background and just notify either through a simple dot on the tab or a popup (having that a configurable option would be nice) when the page changes?
